Not me but my daughter. I collected her 90 to have it serviced, get her checked over for the annual road worthiness test in August and to have a few things fitted that she got for her birthday (it is always stuff for the 90 for birthdays and Christmas etc). With her 90 she uses it for her horsey stuff aswell as the normal business, so when she gets mine she does the same with it! I'll have to clear out the straw when I get the 110 back! So she sent this photo this morning with the following quip "When's the last time masai was off tarmac haha" Masai being the 110.

A big decision to make. Wonder how you will feel when you see him driving by in it! Still they are better being used but it is a decision I would not like to have to make. A lot of work went into your 90 over the years and they do get under your skin, in a good way! Still it will let you concentrate on the New Defender. I hope the new owner appreciates what a fine machine has just entered his life. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge En route from Oslo to Zürich last Friday, my one year old clutch slave cylinder blew a seal, spraying the inside of the bell housing with brake fluid 🙈 Happened while merging onto the autobahn north of Hamburg. Not optimal! Float Shifted without a clutch and made it safely to ikea, where we were towed to a hotel. One week impromptu vacation began. New clutch and hydraulics going in tomorrow at a local specialist. Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭 |

Ditto Had the same thing happen to Miffy the other week. Two year old slave cylinder dumped its fluid in to the bell housing. Luckily for me it was on an industrial estate and apart from blocking the exit for a bit a drink of DOT 4 got me out of the way.
Cause was severe corrosion of the slave cylinder housing around the seal and piston. Never had a slave cylinder fail in over 20 years of driving Glad you made it to safety |

Something so simple causing so much inconveniene. My daughter's 300 tdi 90 suffered a leaking slave cylinder but it was inexpensively and quickly replaced. Was there a specific reason the same system was not used on the Puma? It would have made your replacement quicker and less expensive. Glad you are back motoring! Despite the odd hiccup, the Puma is great to drive 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The Puma doesn’t have a clutch fork which was prone to fail on TD5 and earlier. Which also required the trans to come out, though slave was readily accessible externally. The Puma use a concentric slave cylinder, the only accessible part with trans in place is the bleed valve. The last slave mine had had a pinhole in the diaphragm so I was told, they can be difficult to tell if they are leaking also. I’ve had more problems with the hydraulic and slave system than the clutch it’s self. I’ve never worn the clutch out it’s always been slave failure or a friction plate spring came out or something. So it appears LR have commonly shortened the usable life and mileage compared to earlier models. So far I’ve not managed any more than 48k without a clutch problem so if you have more mileage consider yourself lucky. I could understand it if I did big annual mileage or heavy towing and recovery but no. Overall the Puma is good, the drawback is the cost and the faffing about with transport when these things happen. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Presumably LR used that slave cylinder because they were using a Ford engine and gearbox and saw no point in re-engineering Ford components (which in all honesty were probably better than LR ones if you consider LR's then-recent track record with clutches was not good, look at the awful DMF thing in the TD5).
We should probably be thankful we didn't get the Transit DMF as well, although it cannot be denied that the LR driven plate was a disaster to start with (shame they didn't just use the Transit 4x4 that many of us use now). Last edited by blackwolf on 5th Aug 2022 6:23pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Well, I about soiled myself doing this. But I took it real slow and was VERY careful!! My car had a very interesting side marker configuration... one side just had a small hole and the marker was attached ONLY with double-sided tape. The other side had the prong / double-sided tape, BUT the previous owner had broken off the prongs in the body... So it was time to overhaul to the Puma-style clip-ins.
Here is what I did: I made a template and used that to draw the outline on masking tape mounted to the car. Used a Dremmel with various cutting wheels, with the extension to make the major cuts I carefully bent the pieces and snapped them off Lastly, Used a file to smooth out, and some touch-up paint over the exposed aluminum. Success!!
