1997 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Keswick Green

Slow starter

Hello,
I have a Defender Puma 2007. I went to start her the other day and the instrument lights on the dash have come on but nothing from the starter motor.
I have since done the following:

Recon starter fitted
New battery
Cleaned chassis end of the earth cable
Checked I have voltage at starter with ignition on
Tried jump starting

When I try to start her now the starter engages and she turns over once but very slowly.
As you can imagine I’m pulling my hair out now.
Any suggestions?

Long short but replace the battery in the handset. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali
2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu
2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai

I know it’s easier said than done but check voltage during cranking, you can see down to as low as 8v momentarily on Defenders but if it goes super low there is significant voltage drop there.
Check the relays are all seated and secure under the seat and that battery clamps are tight and secure.

Usually these things are loose grounds, I know you have checked that but it’s a very common culprit.
If not that, a loose relay or connector.

Are the fixings on the starter where the live cable comes in and out secure and the Alternator connection also?

Beware that these are live, but a loose terminal lug on either grounding or live is all it takes.

It maybe worth continuity checking your grounds and cables in case of breaks in the latter instance but is quite rare and usually more applicable to small gauge cables.

Glow plugs, do they show on the dash and illuminate then extinguish as they should in normal time as well? No Guts, No Glory.

Thanks for the input. I’ve checked the relays but may replace them just to be sure.
When I go to crank the voltage drops to 3 or 4 volts.
Glow plugs were changed about three months ago, the only thing I haven’t checked is the alternator cables. I’ll check them tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

^^^^ This sounds very plausible as voltage drop is excessive.
Personally, I’d not like to see anything below 8v, and that’s bad enough.

I know it’s not what you’d want to hear but for many items this is why I only believe in new parts for many things.

I would tend to look at Bosch or Genuine if it was me, but the latter no doubt is at excessive price. No Guts, No Glory.

I replaced mine with a Bosch at €170 plus the old one in exchange. The new starter motor had a sticker on it that sad,"Bosch. Remanufactured. Made in China." 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
