A lot, I’ve budgeted to get a load of bits galvanised, replace all the brake lines with braided, as well as a few parts of the floor that need replaced and then painting etc. I’ve also budgeted to have the chassis painted at the upper end of the costs.

I've had two seperate garages give me very budget costs at around £4-5k for THEM to do a chassis swap.
The end cost will vary considerable depending on what else you decide to replace along the way. I suspect it would be difficult to put anything rusty back onto a shiney new chassis and therefore guess the bill could go up as the replacement part list goes up.  James

2 grand from these chaps. Not had any experience of them but at least they publish a price. Clearly will be more once you add on replacing all the stuff that will break in the process.  |

^^^ I assume those costs are the labour only and don't include the cost of the chassis? If so it puts them in the same ball park as my budgets.

Says Labour only, in the price list
It's all the extras that add up, springs, shocks, bolts, brackets etc Also quite a price difference between Richards/Marsland chassis as well as the other cheaper brands... We've fitted a few Richards, and they've been *OK*, a bit of faffing about to line everything up. The Marsland though are worth every extra penny, everything just fits |

I did it before and I can only say: It takes 2 x your planned budget and 3 x as much time or 3 x your budget and 2 x as much time depending if you refurbish or buy unplanned parts.
Once you start taking things apart you see more work. Ok I changed from a diesel to a petrol V8 and having a first kid and building a house in between it took a bit more time, it took me about 3 years.  Roel

I got a quote in writing last week from them to fit a new chassis .... the price was £5100.00 See below the extract from my quote: Marsland Defender 90 300tdi chassis £2500.00 Chassis delivery £150.00 Consumables wd40/power steering fluid/brake fluid/antifreeze £150.00 Labour cost to fit chassis £1450.00 VAT £850.00 Estimated six weeks work. Then you'll have to decide what NEW bits you'll add  2010 Defender 90 300Tdi CW (White/1994)

I re-chassised mine myself using the body off in one piece method and spent about £4k in parts/materials.
That’s the best way to keep the cost low, if you strip it right down you’ll find many more issues and spend much more. |

Just had mine done (Td5 90) and these numbers are about right. IE is fairly big spread depending on work done while chassis off.

Could you folks that have had a swap give us some examples of what extra work you have needed to have done. I am new to this so I am interested at what sort of things to expect. My chassis is 30 so it may be a future job!!

Amongst things that often need changed are all the suspension bushes, probably dampers if not fairly new, springs if rusty/worn, all fuel and brake lines, some of the wiring loom, potentially fuel tank, engine/transmission mounts, clutch.
Parts of the body can have significant rust and corrosion that is not evident until it is removed - e.g. bulkhead feet/footwells, sill members and b/c posts on 110s, seat box and rear tub mounting points. Any of these will add significantly to the cost and time required if they are to be dealt with. It really depends how well the vehicle has been maintained over the years. |
