And for a MT82 oil change it’s 2.2L for a 2.4, and 2.4L for a 2.2, how weird is that for several reasons. Here is the MT82 manual, have a look to see if the non fill plug is also viable, noting if it makes no difference in where the oil ends up it may be that the threaded hole is not designed to have the plug removed and replaced several times. The biggest risk in removing the wrong thing to fill the box arises from the fact that most of the things that resemble plugs are in fact the pivots for the selector forks inside the box. There is no guarantee if you remove one of these unintentionally that you will be able to get it back in if the selector fork moves, and that probably means a gearbox strip-down.
All the selector fork pivots are symmetrical on both sides of the box, which does make it a bit easier to figure out if it is a pivot or not. They are items 3 and 5, 4 and 6, and 7 and 8 in the diagram linked below. The drain plug is item 1, the filler plug is item 2. https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...%2BP32.pdf Since the MT82 in the Defender is a measured-quantity fill, not a fill-to-overflow type, it doesn't really matter where you put the oil in provided that (a) you put in the right amount and (b) you don't do irreparable damage in the process. Very good point on the pivots blackwolf. I’ve only ever used the designated fill plug, even though it’s in a fairly awkward location.

It is odd, but in the owners manual for the 2.4 on fluid change it states 2.2 L, yet in the owners manual for the 2.2 it states 2.4L for fluid change. Plus I did the first gearbox oil change on my 2.2, measured the drained fluid, and it was exactly 2.4 litres !
Also in the mustang gearbox manual it states 2.6L ! |

I suppose that it is possible that it is a typo or error in the spec. Stranger things have happened, and JLR's attention to detail was not good in the last years of the classic Defender.

Those are very clear answers. I have used the “Not the fill plug” to re fill by box. It does look like a plug, and had no ill effects.
Interestingly, the “Not the fill plug” does not seem to show in this diagram: https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...%2BP32.pdf Part #4, a shift fork pivot is right next to it though, and can be see in the picture in the 2nd post, but uses a larger size LN key. Hello Dinnu You are right I believe... I spoke to my Independent about this today... (as I was there at the Parts Counter, stocking up on Service Items) The Not the Fill Plug looks to be exactly the same as the (genuine) Fill Plug T50 or H8 and is the same depth Casing Screw... I pondered over this 'arrangement' when undertaking the 1st All Oils Change on my 90... The MT82 Workshop Manual pointed me in the right direction. The Set Screw 'next door' is Hex H12 Screw...and appears to be internal pivot point... so leave well alone Click image to enlarge I know Land Rover 'inherited' this arrangement from Ford but it is somewhat confusing... Why didn't Ford just add relief Casing Graphics saying Fill Point at the spot they identify in the workshop manual... My Independent confirmed either (Not the Fill Plug or Fill Plug) can be used but be sure not to disturb the Pivot Points... As for the differing Service Oil Fills recommended, the only thought I have... is if this is the result of differing internal Gears / Mechanisms 'taking up' more or less internal volume and there by requiring the adjustment the Oil Volume to achieve a 'balanced' operational working temperature and pressure within the Gearbox... just a thought. The 2.2 and 2.4 gearboxes are identical and indistinguishable in every respect and are fitted in the sample place and at the same angle. The only reasons I can think of for the fill amounts being different are (a) someone goofed, or (b) some problem was found with the 2.4 oil level. Otherwise I can't see it matters, there are both 2.4 and 2.2 boxes with high mileages working well.
