Really sluggish acceleration
My 2000 TD5 is extremely slow to get up and go.
Push the pedal flat to floor and it seems like eternity until it responds.

Been told possible MAF sensor, what’s the best way to check?

First step if you think it is the MAF sensor is to unplug it. This will force the ECU to revert to a set value for the MAF. If the MAF is dead then you will feel the difference immediately. Thumbs Up

Yep. Classic failed maf. If you’ve got a ecu reader then you can check it’s numbers and find out if working or not. Otherwise unplug and see if a bit better. If yes, then buy a new, and quality one.

I have had the MAF changed, engine has been fully serviced, checked the injector harness plugs, engine has an EGR delete fitted, checked the turbo outlet hoses, no faults on the management system.

But still the pick up and top end speed are slow. Struggling to get to 60mph and throw a hill in there and having to drop to 3rd gear.
Changing the MAF improved it.

Any one got other suggestions without just throwing new parts at it.

Have you checked the turbo wastegate actuator is not seized? This is an old favourite on Td5s but is easy to fix and can cause the sort of power restriction you describe, although usually accompanied by a misfire.

Have a look on Youtube for 'Td5 wastegate stuck' and you'll get umpteen videos showing the same thing.

A quick check of the MAP sensor too is another free thing to tick off the list. This sits in the inlet manifold and is secured with 2 bolts. Undo, lift out carefully and check it is not fouled with oil. With the EGR blanked off they don't get too dirty but worth a check.

Also worth checking you don't have a brake dragging, but I guess you'd have noticed this?

Sorry should have added.

Wastegate checked was a little sticky but freed off fully now.

MAP sensor is also spotless.

Brakes are all brand new, just had the upgrade to vented up front, with cross drilled and grooved with new pads.

Is this a new phenomenon or always been like it?

Worth checking the air side of the engine - turbo/intercooler hoses in good condition? Not leaking boost pressure off?

Exhaust blocked by failed cat?

Have you checked the ECM plugs for oil contamination rather than just changing the loom at the top end?

The defender is new to me so not sure if been like it before. Turbo hoses are all silicon, just checked them this afternoon and cannot see any splits and all seem tight.

I will have to take a look to see if a CAT is fitted, I don't think there is as it is a 2000 model.

Will check the ECM plugs.

I think you’re right re the cat. Should have registered that you’d already said it was a 2000 model.

Does the fuel pump sound ‘healthy’ when you switch the ignition on? Not too loud or high pitched ?

Have you got access to compressed air? Check the waste gate actuator is functioning by blowing air into it to make sure the rod moves as it should. I know you said you’d freed off the mechanism but worth eliminating the actuator as faulty.

fuel pump sounds fine, my mate told me the short cut to priming it, so got to do that just to check it.

Actuator was checked by the local garage, when first setting off I get a good whistle, hence checking the hoses incase boosting through a split hose.

Hmmm, running out of free stuff to check! You’ve not got a ridiculously thick carpet or rubber mat under the accelerator pedal? Lol

No leaks round the fuel pressure regulator? Maybe put a tank of the performance diesel and/or some fuel injector cleaner though it? See if it improves with a bit of driving. My Td5 doesn’t do many miles and it will become sluggish and not want to rev so it needs a good ‘Italian tune up’ from time to time.

No carpet in it, took it out to find the source or some rain entry Laughing

No leaking diesel anywhere.

It has not done many miles in the last couple of years so yeah the old injector clean out might be a good one, going on a 100 mile round trip on Saturday so would be a good blow out.

If there’s not much fuel in it currently put the injector cleaner in and run it until almost empty. It’ll get a good shot of cleaner then, rather than a bottle diluted by a tank full of fuel.

After all the things you have tried and it seems as if the truck in in limp mode :ie reduced power, before you spend any more money i think its a good idea to get it pluged into a diagnostic tool to see what fault codes you have, At least this will point you in the right direction and its could be time and money well spent. Once you have that data you can share it with us so we can help you better .
