Just done mine for the first time. Very straight-forward using the guide in this forum. Just make sure you have a decent 6 sided 27mm socket for the oil filter plastic holder (if that is the one you have - later models have a spin-on canister filter).
I tried using a 12-point socket and the wheel brace and neither was a good enough fit to undo the holder. I bought this socket. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361190858336?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT |

Another thought in case you are not aware.......
For the engine equipped with DPF, oil needs to be 5W-30 to spec. Ford M2C934-B (low SAPS). Opie oils has several. I selected Millers XF Longlife C1 5W-30 Synthetic. My owners manual just says it needs to be 5W-30, but it must be low SAPS. |

And if it's a late model 2.2 then you have a spin on cartridge filter which is FoMoCo branded. Pop into
Your ford dealer for the pressed steel socket that fits it. Mine was extremely tight. This tool makes removal easy. Get a big catch tray for the old oil. When you remove the sump plug it comes out about two foot before dropping. After your first of oil change you will see what I mean  |

I do mine at 6K miles in-between dealer servicing at 12K.
There are a couple of LR dealers on eBay where you can buy a genuine filter and Euro Car Parts is normally the cheapest place for eight litres of Castrol oil with free delivery. Do be ready to catch the oil coming out though. It shoots out a lot further back than you expect! |

Get the catch can in the wrong place the first time you do an oil change and you won't do it again.
 I use a couple of bits of wood offcuts to lift the catcher up a bit higher and as others have said put it about 60-70cms towards the rear of the vehicle from where the drain plug is...... and watch it shoot out!
Then just move the catch can further to the front of the vehicle as the oil spout drops. Then if it's an older 2.4 with the stupid cartridge oil filter you can then have the pleasure of trying to catch the oil from that. 
All good fun so I'm told and lets you see what the underside is like and teaches you little things about your vehicle. AlanH. |

I can’t remember who told me about this, but it was someone one here: when removing the cartridge filter, wrap it in a plastic bag first and the bag will catch all the wayward oil, leaving your sleeve oil free! |

Under bed storage box widely available for about a fiver, just about the right length and width to catch the spills.

If you fit a Femco drainplug you can attach a hose to it and avoid mess altogether. Excellent products.

sounds like pretty much everyone gets caught out by the speed and trajectory of the oil the first time they do it!
