Click image to enlarge I know exchanging my uk licence to Spain was a pain due to grandfathers rights they wanted me to take a class 1 test to preserve my ability to tow a trailer (I have towed trailers off and on for over 10 years, race cars normally etc) I now have my Spanish with the trailer part but limited to 8.25 ton like the UK one would of been. But it was hard work to preserve it. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

The rules about what you can tow did not change on 15 November 2021.
The change will be introduced at a later date, and as soon as possible. Sign up for email alerts to be told when the new date is confirmed. You must continue to follow the current rules until the law changes. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-rules-for-...utumn-2021 https://www.instagram.com/baltic_blue_defender/ |

Data diving the parlement files seem to indicate a the road safety concerns being raised and the request of an Impact assessment from the DfT

It's officially changed, at last.
Your rights to towing are no longer based on your ability to afford a £600 course inc test. From Today, anyone with a car license can tow up to 3500kg provided the towing vehicle is rated for it. First bit of fairness for the less well off in a long time. |

You didn’t need to do the course, just the test. It’s a backwards move Mike

It will be interesting to see if the change actually has the effect of allowing a reduction in the backlog of HGV driving tests with a consequent improvement in the shortage of UK HGV drivers, since this was the sole justification for the change.

Good timing, as at this time of year there won’t be a rush in one go so will implement a gradual take up of it.
I somehow doubt you’ll see massive increase in trailer towing around as some may think. For once common sense prevails and allows for people to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. I believe there was some minor changes to things such as breakaway cables too I thought I had read about such as having a secondary at all times but don’t quite me on that. On my unbraked (which’s suits me fine) I always use the standard Ifor breakaway loop, but I use an additional breakaway cable too and always have. Just useful for extra peace of mind. Will benefit British manufacturing and freedom of choice, safety will be the drivers realisability and failing to uphold that will no doubt be treated just as seriously as anything else such as having bald tyres or lights not working. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
