First deliveries delayed. đ
Rivian CEO tells customers first deliveries delayed until September Rivian CEO tells customers first deliveries delayed until September. Some of the EV startup's clients have complained about a lack of communication. Rivian is delaying the first deliveries of its R1T battery electric pickup until September, CEO RJ Scaringe said Friday in a letter to customers who expected their trucks this month. "We know you can't wait to get behind the wheel of your vehicle. Earlier this summer, we announced that deliveries would begin in July; however, the timing for the first deliveries of the R1T has shifted to September, with the R1S shortly thereafter in the fall. I wanted to be sure you heard this from me directly," Scaringe wrote. Rivian owners have been griping in online forums about the lack of communication from the company in recent weeks as anticipation for the Launch Edition of the R1T grew. Scaringe, in his letter, placed the much of the blame for the latest delay on the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing chip shortage and the difficulty of producing three new vehicles in a new plant. He wrote: "The cascading impacts of the pandemic have had a compounding effect greater than anyone anticipated. Everything from facility construction, to equipment installation, to vehicle component supply (especially semiconductors) has been impacted by the pandemic. "Beyond these unforeseen challenges, launching three new vehicles while setting up a multi-vehicle manufacturing plant is a complex orchestra of coordinated and interlinked activities where small issues can translate into ramp delays." Rivian's plant in Normal, Ill., Scaringe said, is currently producing vehicles on two production lines: one for the R1T and R1S utility vehicle, the other for electric delivery vans for Amazon, Rivian's biggest commercial customer. He said the company is working to ensure that vehicles sold to customers won't have quality issues. "We have now built hundreds of vehicles as part of our validation process, with many of those spotted out in the wild covered in unique vinyl wraps. I have been asked why we aren't delivering those vehicles or why we continue to test rather than deliver. "We believe it is critical to both our long-term success and your ultimate satisfaction that the quality and robustness of our launch products truly sets the tone for what to expect from us as a brand," Scaringe said in his note. The company, which has reportedly been planning a stock offering that would place its market value at $70 billion, originally planned to start customer delivers late last year, but has delayed several times as its factory and work force, now totaling 7,000, has come online. https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/riv...-september |

As one manufacturer leaves, another looking to settle.
If we can get them here, rather than one of our European competitors, and they stay for as long as Honda did, then it must be worth sweetening the pot to start with? |

Shame Rivianâs R1T will launch without tank turn feature "to execute a perfect tank turn, the surface the R1T is on must be perfectly flat, and Rivian is concerned that some drivers might not be able to control the vehicle during the turn." https://samacharcentral.com/rivians-r1t-wi...n-feature/ |

Interesting article, especially "Rivian says that the truck is designed to fit in the average American garage, something that a lot of modern trucks canât do. In other words, Rivian is going after the types of people who buy Subarus and Land Rovers, rather than Power Wagons."
Interesting article: " Rivian also disclosed how many of its SUVs and trucks have been pre-ordered. Potential customers have put down a refundable $1,000 deposit for non-binding rights to buy 48,390 R1T and R1S models." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/amazon-back...45531.html |

There is a lot to like about it, without doubt, but how is it going to work in the UK? Its unladen weight is 3.2 tons (and that is with the standard battery pack, the extended range battery will be heavier). This limits the payload to about 1 ton (i.e., total MAM 4.25 tonnes) if it is to be driveable on a Cat B licence, and a Cat B (or BE) licence holder can't tow with it, can't carry goods in it, and would require the mandatory 5 hours minimum extra training from a registered training provider to drive it.
A 1 tonne payload may not be an issue, but not being able to tow will be, and unless I have misunderstood the recent changes to the law you won't be able to tow with a Cat BE under these changes. See The Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) (Amendment) Regulations 2018 So although some might be bought by Cat B holders it really falls into the goods vehicle arena and I can see this really limiting UK sales. Unless of course I have missed something.... Last edited by blackwolf on 15th Nov 2021 7:06pm. Edited 1 time in total |
