I'm not a fan of netgear. My 8 port netgear is now a 6 port for some unknown reason. The Netgear wifi access point only lasted 2 years.
Take a look at Draytek Vigor G1080 or similar. Bit more expensive, but more like a proper business switch. It's a proper managed switch rather than a glorified hub. Allows for traffic priority etc. |

I just brought a udm pro se (dream machine) has a 8 port Poe switch built in, and also 2.5gb uplink and two 10gb connectors so I can expand if needed.
It’s not cheep but looks to be simple to use, already have a access point from them that works seamlessly Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

I've just added a TP-Link TL-SG1008P 8-Port 4-Port PoE Gigabit Ethernet Switch to my network because I intend to add some PoE CCTV cameras. It replaced an old 5 way 10/100 switch and has allowed my wired devices to take full advantage of the 300M fibre broadband that BT brought to my village recently

Looks like we've recommended the full range of price options! £30, £90, £300. Anyone higher suggestions? Don't forget, OP, there's a huge difference between a managed and an unmanaged switch. Unmanaged isn't much better than a hub if you have a lot of stuff connected. |

Thanks guys, - but am I any the wiser?
I really don't think I need anything high end, the gamers have grown up and gone and no one is zooming from home. Only hard wired because circumstances allowed, no carpets, floorboards up, etc.. Current demand is, a desktop, a couple of smart TVs and a little smart lighting. Don't really need an 8 port, but just future proofing. I don't have any networking background and this is my first attempt at setting up a home network. Does managed offer much advantage over unmanaged for my needs? It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this. SIII CSW Safari, limestone, (JAC 914N). Where is she now? It's not a car, it's a way of life! |

The simple option would be buy the cheep one and start with that then if needs move on maybe you connect some Poe stuff and need a different type of hub, or you want some cameras that auto record to a dvr, etc Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

I have done the same for working from home. I've been running 2 of these for a few years now. One in my office for NAS, Access Point, Laptops etc. and one in the TV room for TV/AMP/SKY etc. I can't fault them.

A 5 or 8 port unmanaged network switch like the one mentioned earlier will be perfect for you.

Depends upon your broadband speed. If you're on gigabit, then won't matter. We get about 25Mb and can only upload at 1Mb. If I max out the upload, everything stops. By having a managed switch, I'm able to prioritise the traffic to make sure streaming works while downloads take a back seat. Start off cheap (it will do as a spare), then see how you get on. Important thing is to do the network ports properly. Don't just have a cable hanging out of a wall. |

I’ve had a cheap Netgear unmanaged hub thingy for years with no problem. However, whilst I’ve stuff connected to all the ports I’m only really ever using one device at a time so didn’t see any point in managed. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
