Steel plates by rear speakers
I have some white fluffy corrosion at the steel plates by the rear speakers on my Puma 2012 XS Station Wagon.

What's the plate for and how do you remove it ? I really need to put a barrier between the steel and aluminium before it gets any worse

I don’t have that on mine (2013). It might be for where the seat belt reenforcement passes through, or it could have had an internal roll cage in the past?

Those plates are reinforcing plates for the forward facing seats seat belts.
Beneath the tub, there is a bracket that bolts to the rear cross member and goes to the underside of the wheelarch. That plate hold it in place, and then a bit more forward of it there is the lower seatbelt mount, and a small bolt (looks like a gas strut bolt) just to prevent the seat belt webbing from getting twisted.

Most likely, the bracket between the crossmember and the tub is very corroded too. On my MY12, there was no paint on them anymore. When I bought it in 2019, they were structurally sound, but very rusty. I have since then galvanized them. When fitting back, I placed a plastic isolator, and applied glass sealant (type of sealant that never goes hard, kind of Dum Dum of the old day) to create a water seal.

The lower 2 brackets in the picture below are the rear seat belt brackets, between the wheel arch and the rear cross member.

Thanks Dinnu. I investigated underneath today and I can see the brackets in your photo. I had a dinitrol underseal recently so they are covered in that. I should be able to unbolt and put in a gasket to try and stop the corrosion.

Yes, those plates can be removed by undoing 2 nuts from below. The bolts are welded to the plate, so can be done single handed. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
