Meaning... pry dash back a bit and lubricate and free up or dash out and replace?

If you search I think it was Blackwolf who wrote an excellent 'how to' set of instructions, I can't remember if he covered it there or someone else in another post, but remember to mark the 12pm point on the spindles, withdraw the rack slowly and carefully, re grease everything and free off spindles if you're not replacing them, then make sure the marks are at 6pm point when it goes back together so the spindle has a fresh set of teeth.

Yes, have seen that excellent write up, I am wondering more what can be accomplished without removing the dash.
Going to try freeing up and lubricating from the outside first as described. |

Mines a left hooker so I was able to just slacken everything off enough to access the motor, remove the motor and then service the rack - but I didn't have the column or instruments to deal with.
I think I've read on here others have managed the same in a right hand drive. Good luck! |

Most likely you'll need to replace the wiper boxes and the drive cable. Bearmach do OEM wiper boxes which are indeed the real thing without the LR boxes and prices.

So copious amount of 3in1 to the outer spindles and a lot more force than I was comfortable with and all working.
Kept them going for a good hour with repeated sprays of 3in1. There is a definite hard click in the action so clearly going to need disassembly... another day. Thank you for all the advice. |

Like dorsetsmith after oiling spindles I seal with grease but use red rubber grease under the rubber boots as its rubber friendly.
Also if your rubber spindle boots are deteriorating you can get replacement ones off a well know auction site. |

The click is usually the spindle moving in and out with the change of direction. You can remove the back of the wheel box and bend the tang in slightly to take out the freeplay in the spindle. But on a Puma by the time you’ve stripped the dash out you might as well fit new OEM wheel boxes, and flip the rack cable over to present the unworn side to the spindles. I have fitted design and development wheel boxes and they are very good. |

Hello Stiff1
I suspect you have achieved a delay in the inevitable (but well done) keep 'feeding' them with lubricant and you may get through winter. I could not free up mine recently, so took on the replacement big job and lesson learnt, regular maintenance Penetrating Oil / ACF50 down spindle and grease in rubber cap on the Spindle. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic57900-15.html Good Luck...
