Don't know the cost, but talk to Adwest, and buy direct.

It is possible to renew the seals.... but this tends to delay the inevitable. On my old V8 I used to slosh a cupful of brake fluid in there to make the seals swell up for the MOT, but I guess you're probably looking for less of a bodge than that Whistle

I spoke to my local Indy about replacing the seals some time ago, he said that for the time it takes in labour charges, and never a pucker long term soloution he always only ever fits a new box which is cheaper in the long term. My problem is that we are thinking of selling the car therefore I didn't really want to spend a fortune on it. That said we've had it since new, it's done 70k miles and apart from a brake master cylinder and a handbrake cable we've not spent a penny on it apart from servicing. MY02 Defender 110 CSW air con, electric windows, privacy glass, traction control, abs,tow pack, parking sensors, rai, special rear seat conversion.

Second the Adwest route, apparently they remachine the castings, everything else is new.

I fitted a couple of recon units to my 100" bitsa, 18months max before they leak again. Adwest 3 years and still dry.

Spoke to Adwest today (Gary) very helpfull chap. He quoted me £281 + £28 delivery on a new OEM spec box, plus fitting of course, but he says he would always recommend going down the route of a 'Seal Repalcement kit' in the first instance costing about £20 from Britpart + Labour. I could not do this job myself and I know the Indy I normally use in Rushden only wants to replace the whole box. Rang another Indy in Towcester who gave me the same old sob story saying you need specialist tools to do this job. Well I called Gary back at Adwest, he said this was total B Censored S and clearly they can't be asked either to get their hands dirty and can make more money out of me if they sell me a recon'd box. So anyone please got any idea's where I might find someone to get this job done in the Northants/North Bucks area or even South Leic's area?

£91 here exchange http://www.mm-4x4.com/steering-145-c.asp

Can I ask a steering question. When I turn the steering at very low speeds on my TD5 I get a rubbing sound, quite loud, and it seems to be coming from the steering column. I have to get the thing up on some jacks and have a listen, I just wondered if anyone might know what it was?

9 times out of 10 you end up replacing the steering box. TBH, as you need to remove the box to replace the seals anyway, you may as well put in a new box - Fit and forget.

my old 300 leaked, i bought one from Adwest and fitted it, quite straightforeward.
just be careful of the unions for the hoses on top of the box, they will be very tight and a b!tch to loosen off! BM52

Shop around the usual suspects for the OEM box. You may be able to get it cheaper. Just insist on it being Adwest if that is what you want. I know Brookwells have them on the shelf normally.

Thanks guys, the seal option would not be in the running if we were keeping the car, but we want to trade her up to a newer model and I really didn't want to fork out £350 + on a car we are not keeping. My problem now is finding someone who will do the seals for me.

Cheers
