Can heavy rain or car wash splash wet the air filter?
Hi Everyone,

I am driving a Defender Puma 2.2 110. Where I am, we get a huge amount of heavy rain each year. The rig was fitted with a LR (mantec styled) RAI on stock air filter box and pipes. After driving in a very heavy rain, my air filter got wet and it ripped (check lights on and limp mode). The mechanic told me that water may have been sucked in via the air intake like a straw and trapped thereby wetting the filter.

1. Does the reasoning sound right or is it just an excuse for poorly fitted air intake filter lid?
2. If I remove the RAI (I don't really need it for the dust) will heavy downpour or carwash splash be a problem for the Air Intake filter?

Looking forward to any help/comments.

You may get a better response if you post in the Puma section. Spraying water directly upwards in to RAI will ultimately find its way downhill

Do you still have the ‘sump’ water dump valve in place.

I have heard of the issue you mention with Freelander 2’s that then sucked the paper into the turbo.

All those bends that LR have as standard slow incoming water down so it should collect then get dumped under its own weight assuming no upwards pressure as you would if wading.

I had exactly the same setup and exactly the same problem, the RAI now removed along with the reoccurring wet filter problem. Bin the bloody thing.

See this thread... first picture shows what looks like a fan. It is there to spin the air. I am sure my 2.2 box has water drains.

Exactly the same configuration and no problems. Heavy rain while overtaking lorries.
The car is LHD i.e. the RAI on the right hand side is really nearby the lorries while overtaking.

But you shouldn't blow any water inside the RAI while washing it. That's for sure.

Standard vehicle (puma) and standard air box, and every filter I've ever taken out of it has shown wet staining on the edge of it. My brother's is the same. His is heavily modified air path with snorkel and ally tubing to the standard air box. Same issue.

It's damn strange! Now I removed it and am using the KBX side grill. Just wondering how susceptible to heavy downpour or road splashes.
