Land Rover Reportedly Working On A Hotter Defender With 600+ HP Click image to enlarge "In particular, the publication suggests the SUV will trade the current supercharged 5.0-liter V8 for a BMW-sourced twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. While that remains to be seen, the model is rumored to have more than 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS). That would be a sizable increase over the Defender V8, which has 518 hp (386 kW / 525 PS) and 461 lb-ft (625 Nm) of torque. It enables the Defender 90 variant to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.9 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). Little else is known about the model at this point, but the publication says it will have “sportier design elements” and a unique suspension to deliver improved driving dynamics. If everything pans out, the Defender SVR could be introduced next year and cost around $125,000. 19” wheels won’t fit over the brake calipers without a brake modification which might not be sensible on a “performance” car. Can’t see why not, depending on the actual wheel - the fronts look to be the same 380mm ones as used on various Range Rovers, for which there’s a factory 19” option.

Don’t go for the 22” wheels you won’t be able to go down further than a 20” wheel even if you went down the lucky8 break calliper kit route to put 18” wheels on because 22” spec has a larger rotors. Choose the 20” as it keeps the rotor small enough to be able to do minor brake mod in the future changing the calliper only and also there are some great Nokian winter tyres available in 20”. Also if you choose 20” then you can go down to 19” without any modifications but there’s very few tyres available in 19” so I would just stick with the 20” from the factory order and consider the luck8 brake calliper kit later down the line if you wanted 18” wheels. |

Honestly Land Rover have completed screwed up this defender with the 22” wheels option hardly any of the dealerships know about the bigger rotor change and quite a few owners are now finding they are stuck with a minimum size of 20” wheel on what is supposed to be LR flagship off road vehicle! I nearly made this mistake and went through hell and back with my dealership to get the 22” wheels off the order.

It’s the rear calipers that are the issue for the 18” wheels (P400 on 19” wheels with the 350mm rear discs) - the V8s all have the largest 380mm fronts/365mm rears for both 20” and 22” wheel sizes.

Haven’t checked part nos, but if the calipers on the largest 380mm/365mm discs are the same as the rest of the stuff with those brake sizes that they’re used on (and the fronts certainly look very similar), you should be able find or specify a 19” wheel to physically fit over them, as you can on the RR and RRS.

Patrick from Land Rover monthly said you can get 19” on, we’ll that’s what he was told at the press event so must be an option to get the smaller rotors.

As above, both 90 and 110 V8s have the 380mm/365mm brakes for both 20” and 22” wheels (which doesn’t mean there isn’t a 19” that will fit).

Think I would be pretty hacked off reading this if I had just taken delivery of a new V8 Defender. They do seem to have a habit of doing it. Like announcing all the 6 pot engines so soon after launch. |

Picked mine up today.
Very happy with it. As regards the sound it’s not an SVR more similar to a V8 Range Rover. I had a P300 for 6 months & struggled to get 22mpg. Just done one medium journey & averaged more, but I was probably driving like Miss Daisy - lol I do love the sound when you floor it, it’s more discreet than an SVR or a G63 which it has been compared with. I like defenders / series land fivers always have done, from my first a 1957 to the last of the old defenders loved tinkering amending & updating, this one does not need anything Click image to enlarge 2020 P300 HSE |

Will take some more photos & post 👍 Fuel consumption has been between 17mpg booting it to work in the morning & 25mpg driving to our house in the Cotswolds - 40 miles each way The exhaust sound is that of a 5litre Range Rover rather than that of the RRS SVR both the same engine. Initially I was probably disappointed by the exhaust sound but I think now I appreciate it for what it is. It is a very very good car, but if I’m honest I had a P300HSe for six months that I sold to buy this, that was a £60k car I’m not sure this is worth a £47k premium in what you get for your money, however a big however defender V8’s hold their money better than most defenders, it puts a smile on my face every time I turn the key - that whilst worth nothing is also priceless 😊.
