Its great that you have found the issue causing the heat but you have an underlying problem that needs to be resolved, be it cable lubrication, routing, adjustment or sticking shoes.
Strip it back, clean and lubricate all the components, reassemble and set up your cable and adjustment by the workshop manual. That'll prevent the problem occurring again and save you having to buy new handbrake shoes without you having to wiggle the handbrake lever to relieve cable tension Thumbs Up .

The TDCi handbrake is renowned for issues if the shoes are adjusted too close to the drum. Usually it is a knocking and snagging effect as the shoes pick up the drum in normal driving, especially noticeable at low speeds.

It is always worth have a little more slack on the shoes than you think should be there. If the handbrake applies fully in under five clicks, the adjustment is too tight.

I wonder if this is the issue that I have with my juddering under load 🤔 as I stripped the prop shafts off and handbrake. Vibration went for a few miles and now back.

Also have a very hot transmission tunnel/seat box.

My handbrake is fully tight at two maybe three clicks at a stretch. I’ll slacken it off and see how I go.

My transmission tunnel turns in to a radiator if I open the windows. It's so bad that it's cooler to drive with the windows shut in the summer than it is to open them, which is a bit counter intuitive (and sweaty).

Mine too !!

I found that driving (slowly or quickly ) with the window open caused the transmission tunnel to become VERY warm - but as soon as I closed the window it quickly cooled down again.
This happened in all heater settings, recirculation air or with the air vents open or closed ...

Keeping the windows closed solved the problem ... it seems that this is probably related to the current 2.2 as I never had the same problem in the 2.4

My hand break is very loose (catching towards the end of travel) so I think that is not applicable to the problem. I have replaced the flooring under the cubby box for the Nackky under cubby and Planner air heater unit, which has no insulating mating so may refit that. Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Interesting that you say you think it’s a 2.2 problem, because Blackwolf and I both have 2.4s. Laughing

But seriously, i never had the problem at all in the 2.2, and remember that it had a very loose handbrake. Also I didn’t have the problem in the current DCPU 2.4, until the output shaft and clutch were replaced. So perhaps the handbrake was over tightened when put back together? Going to take it apart, clean, regrease and reassemble it this week, but slightly looser. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

For sure - I follow this trick most of the times. Why use an handbrake? Wink

The handbrake is very good for steep hills. There you shall be extra-careful because the car will move if the hill is too steep and it's secured by gear. But it will be no problem to follow and catch it Smile

My transmission became more than hand-warm (40++ °C) while the car was new. Now that it is older I enjoy the cold transmission, a far better slight and the lower fuel consumption.

Thought I would revive this old thread rather than starting a new one!

I'm intending to adjust my handbrake this evening and have a couple of noddy questions:

1) How best to grease the cable?
2) What should I use? Grease or would PTFE spray be suitable?
3) How does the auto-adjust work? Am I doing something to keep making it tight?

Drove ~150 miles last night and the transmission tunnel was roasting. When I slowed down to a near stop I could hear the shoes rubbing Big Cry 2011 CSW XS 90

Mine gets BOILING on a long journey - it even melted Mrs Hank's make up inside her handbag in the footwell once - she was not impressed.

Genuinely don't think it's the handbrake drum in my instance as I once travelled with an infra-red thermometer to keep tabs on temps just after I rebuilt the transfer box. Transfer box and subassemblies were around 75 degrees... Though I suppose that is pretty warm next to your leg > 110 XS Double Cab

Have you checked the expander if it is sticking this would cause your problem? Item 29 in the picture

Bad news if it is shot as genuine ones cost over £500.00 which is ridiculous for such a small part AEU2734. The trouble is aftermarket expanders do not last very long.

The 2.2 has a DPF in that area which will get very hot especially whilst regenerating
