So from my research here and looking at all the videos online I have come to the conclusion that diffs, transfer and gearbox oils are all the same. Looking at the handbook also, it is possible to use 1 oil for all 3 and be within the recommended guidelines.

I was planning to use Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90. Which is a GL4 coded Oil. But instead went for the Motul Gear 300 which is a GL4/GL5. GL5 being (from what I have seen from all the research done-but i am no expert Whistle ) is a harder wearing grade.

So, Motul Gear 300 in Gearbox, Transfer box and both Axles it is. Bit more expensive but why eff about.

Hope this helps other and saves them the many house I spent trying to research the best options.

Have not bought the oil yet so if i'm wrong please shout. Thumbs Up

Interesting - good plan to use a top-quality GL4/GL5 oil. I always stayed as close to spec as follows:

Keen to hear other views, but your idea currently sounds good Thumbs Up

I am a little bit confused on gearbox oil quantity. Yesterday I replaced the main gearbox oil, and as I have read so many times before, I simply refilled 2.2 liters of Millers TRX SYNTH 75w90.
So the usual case, I only read the manual after I am done, and to my surprise, my manual, from a 2012 vehicle states 2.4 liters for a Refill. For me a Refill means drain, and Refill, not from dry. Was there a spec change by JLR, or what?

Sorry for the poor quality picture, but here it is from my manual. Should I add another 200ml?

Just looking at my manual for my 2013 2.2 and it says 2.4 litres refill as pictured above, no mention of dry fill quantities. I wonder why they changed that from the 2.2 litres refill and 2.4 litres dry fill for the earlier puma 2.4’s ? mistake in the user manual or should the 2.2 pumas be refilled with an extra 200ml of transmission oil.

Views appreciated.

Ps . Will be doing all the fluids in a weeks time so will measure what comes out.

Both the Defenders I have had, both main dealer serviced. On the first service the dealer charged for some transmission oil and topped up the transmission Rolling with laughter

To answer my own question. On draining my gearbox I measured 2.4 litres exactly. So it does look like the owners manual is correct for the 2.2 puma. I.e 2.4litres refill. I therefore filled with 2.4 litres of fresh castrol syntrans multi vehicle 75w -90.

I did the transfer box and the diffs at the same time.

Re the diff fill and drain plugs, I can’t find the torque settings for these. So I torqued at 30Nm. Is this correct ? I read somewhere on here it should be 60Nm but that seemed to much as at 30Nm it seemed tight enough. It would be good to know the official figure.

Thank you for the info. I could not be sure on the amount of drained oil as it was leaking and I was guess topping. Incidentally 2.4liters had came out as well, so I was spot on.

As for torque figures, this might help. https://www.defender2.net/forum/post37498.html 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks dinnu , I will keep an eye out for leaks on the diffs, I replaced the diff drain plugs using magnetic ones from megasquirt-v8 and used some loctite 248 blue on the threads and expect at 30Nm it will be ok. If not I will tweak a little more towards 55 -60 Nm or drain and use some hylomar blue on the plugs, just did not have to hand to use today.
On the gearbox I used magnetic drain and fill plugs from foundry4x4. Don’t think I needed magnetic fill plug as oil does not reach there but prefer the hex bolt head over the 8mm Alan key head. Noting i think the MT 82 gearbox has a magnet in the bottom already, but fitted magnetic plug as a belts and braces solution. The transfer box already has a magnetic drain plug.

Ps I used a 1.2m length of 12mm clear plastic tube with a funnel connected from the engine bay, worked perfect to fill the gearbox and very easy to do, just let gravity do all the work.

Just to double check, would I be OK to use this in the diffs? The book says 85w-90. Do I need to put anything around the threads when I put the plugs back in? Cheers

Yes, that will be absolutely fine.

You shouldn't need to put anything around the threads if everything is clean and in good condition. Having said that, if you're doing this for the first time then I'd recommend investing in some new magnetic drain plugs. I seem to remember that the ones that I fitted a few years ago came with a coating on the threads. Darren

Mine came from eBay. Search for 'Defender magnetic diff drain plug'. Darren

Decided to go for this instead as was cheaper, which I assume is just as good for the diffs, 4x of them for just under £30 from Euro!

just an FYI - anyone with a 2.2 from 2012-2014, don't trust the auto pick from most websites....ordered the genuine land rover service kit, inc FoMoCo screw type metal filter.

dumped the oil, and in my own stupidity (1st defender, 1st time doing a DIY oil change...EVER) clocked the oil filter had a hex bolt on it...hoped/wished it was just a cover for the metal filter, removed to find a nice oily paper filter....

8am to Eurocar parts to pick up the correct one tomorrow am.... hoping no one try to steal it tonight when its bone dry with no oil!

now checking the vins can see my bad, im DA431..the metal screw ons are DA444

will also swap out the file filter tomorrow - hopefully theres only one of those!
