Only a few months off release now: https://electrek.co/2021/02/22/rivian-test...eliveries/
It's on independent suspension like the new Defender (not sure if coils or air) but it appears to ride over the rocks quite well. The Defender looks like it jiggles a lot in the videos I've watched, although that might have been due to air springs at full extension. The Rivian being considerably heavier than the Defender probably also helps the ride. Anyway, it's looking promising as a BEV option - and for me, much more so than the CT. |

Loving the Tank Turn
Interesting review of the R1S If they ever de-ICE'd the New Defender for electric power I think this gives a fore-taste of what it could be like Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history) |

Not a metric I'm really interested in but 0-60mph in 3.0 seconds, makes the new Defender V8 at 5.something look a little slow.

It may not be everyone's cup-of-tea, but I reckon the Rivian is definitely going to raise the bar for electric utility vehicles. It's the first EV that even begins to address what I want from a vehicle, and I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Due in the UK in 2022 apparently.
It really is amazing to see how far this company has come in less time than it's taken JLR to push a new Defender out after canning the old one: "It was founded by 37-year-old Robert ‘R.J’ Scaringe who dreamt of starting his own car company when he was a teenager. In mid-2018, Rivian turned up at the LA Auto Show and announced plans to build an all electric pickup called the R1T and an all-electric SUV called the R1S. Since then Scaringe has raised $1.7bn from Amazon and $500m from Ford. Amazon has placed a $5bn order for 100,000 fully electric delivery vans as part of its ‘Climate Pledge’, while Ford will build a new Lincoln SUV in partnership with Rivian." https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/th...oon/218894 Maybe the next few years will see a major change, where brands with 100 year history and generational DNA, will give way to the new upstarts? |

Some really interesting EVs in that list.
But that Rivian is a total winner. Unless JLR can pull something decent out of the bag in the next 5 years that's where my money will be going. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews |

I do hope that this case doesn't push Rivian off the rails; although if it's true then maybe it should.
"Tesla can move forward with trade-secret suit against Rivian Rivian denies wrongdoing and says the case is an effort to kill competition in the electric car industry. Tesla Inc. can move forward with a lawsuit claiming that Rivian Automotive Inc. stole its trade secrets with the help of former employees of the electric car maker. In a tentative ruling Monday, Santa Clara, Calif., Superior Court Judge William Monahan declined Rivian’s request to throw out a misappropriation of trade secrets claim. Monahan agreed to dismiss Rivian’s intentional interference in contract claim, saying the trade secrets part covered that. The judge also declined to dismiss Tesla’s claims against seven of its former employees, all of whom the carmaker accuses of divulging trade secrets when they went to work for the rival startup. Tesla claimed in its lawsuit, filed in July, that Rivian had hired at least 178 of its former employees. Rivian denies any wrongdoing and says Tesla’s lawsuit is an effort to kill competition in the electric car industry, which Tesla dominates. The case is Tesla Inc. v. Rivian Automotive Inc., 20CV368472, California Superior Court, Santa Clara County (San Jose)." https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppli...nst-rivian |

Hadn't picked it up until I saw it elsewhere but this is an interesting development ~your insurance link includes: "Every Rivian vehicle is equipped with our Driver+ suite of safety technology. In addition to helping protect you and your loved ones, having these features also lowers your insurance premium. When you select Rivian Insurance, you automatically receive our Driver+ rate reduction. For more savings, we offer an additional program that rewards you for using Active Driving Assistance, our Driver+ feature that automatically steers and adjusts your speed on the highway. When you opt in to this program, the more often you engage Active Driving Assistance, the lower your insurance rates when you renew." |

I thought that was interesting, although I'd be concerned that if they monitored my driving they'd up my premium!
Did you see the servicing details? Very forward thinking and convenient. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

Yes they do look interesting; although not having to go to a main dealer and have the opportunity to browse the latest offerings can be two-edged sword for for the dealer and the enthusiast owner.
I do worry a little at "associated predictive algorithms". Fine whilst under warranty but most owners want fix on fail, or as near to it as safely possible when they are footing the bill. |
