Recently had service and MOT and at the same time I had the Cam belt renewed. Since then motor has stood fo a week or so at a time without moving, but on first start up after the change I had clouds of blue smoke which cleared after a short run.
I thought it was just the possibility of excess oil being about after the work that was done and the non moving but each time on start up I am having the same problem (although the motor is standing for a week or so without moving). I did not have any smoke up on start before the cam belt change so could the timing be out or something else stemming from that or is it just coincidence? Sorry got my terminology wrong. Not the fuel idle screw, it's known as the 'smoke screw'.

At first I thought it was a bit sluggish but not so marked, a trusted indie did the work but that was my first thought that it was something to do with the timing. Jeff

More sluggish than normal when cold?
I'd take it back and ask them to recheck the timing in view of the new smoking and change in performance. It isn't a big job to check it, they don't have to remove the timing belt cover to do it. |

Does it take more turns than normal to start? Sounds like FiP timing is out. Can be adjusted through font end cover. Or belt out a tooth. Cheers

from description sounds like unburnt fuel and hence timing is out, assuming it never did it before.
starting 1st turn is good for any LR (!) timing can still be out though. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

yeah that sounds like its timing to me, I would take it back to who ever did the belt, and say you want this rechecking. just in case something has moved.
I had garages cock up timings on me before, cost be a fortune, my dad ended up taking it to a tuning place to have it checked over. After the second garage cocked it up. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

I agree with most of the posts here it does sound like something isn’t timed up from the recent work, but it’s the blue smoke that’s confusing because unburnt fuel passing through would produce white smoke whereas over fuelling would be black smoke
Blue smoke would be from burning oil which doesn’t indicate an out of timing issue. Ride like you stole it!! If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |
