When we've done sleeper retaining walls in the past, we used to put the geotextile (mypex) against the soil and backfill against the boards with drainage gravel which helped to stop the rot.
A 6x1 treated board will span the steel vertically screwed into the sleepers each side then the same or a planed and radiuses deck board on the top, brought forward to the front of the 6x1if you intend to sit on it. HTH Keith |

Another ramp retaining wall on the other side made with sleepers / beams etc...
Have to be able to get the cars on the garden for our own garden shows at home. Now following round to the patio area with sleepers so give an edge to the garden, Click image to enlarge 14 meters of Aco drain ordered to fit across the front and down the side to link up with existing drain. Jobs just keep on going, I'm also re-painting around 16 fence panels and adding extra cladding to make look new... hundreds of meters of wood cut and painted. However my dad let me use his nail gun and its ace Click image to enlarge What started with oh lets get a bigger workshop has ended up being a complete garden make over.... |

Ok so more on the Garden as I wait for the workshop..
What was meant to be a workshop has had massive knock on effects to me pretty much making a new garden So the ramp and retaining walls are finished (well pretty much I'm making the other side slightly higher by one sleeper but easy compared to where I started, Click image to enlarge Then Massive Day for us Friday, 7am start with a 8 wheel truck carrying 20 tonnes of top soil and another large Truck with all our turf, tonne bags of pea gravel for more french drains... Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 6 People on the job from 7am until 6pm with occasionally 2 more doing various jobs. Click image to enlarge Great teams of lads and the boss was getting as mucked in as any of them... |

So What started as a mud / clay 'Garden' Friday morning
Click image to enlarge We now have grass, the challenge to keep off it and keep it watered for a month. We are so happy with it... Makes my hard work with the prep work, retaining wall and sleepers round the edge etc all worth it. Click image to enlarge Still on the list is breaking up the concrete for the drains and install the Aco drains. However its come a long way Workshop hopefully starting soon |

Slight update but bad news....
The workshop has been delivered, but on checking the block work base, we had two issues... The actual concrete base was not level and rightly or wrongly we had assumed it was when we built the wall to the spec of the workshop fitters.. However it was not true enough and more of a parallelogram... So one issue was our fault, the other the concrete guy who we had thought leveled it.... Anyway I kept my cool as the fitters basically told me they cannot fit this week and that need to re do the wall....ooh and extra charge for them all to come back.. So this week I have done just that and fingers crossed its correct now. I've a few more blocks to fit and some pointing up to make good but its mostly done. We have also made up some covers for the metal posts we will cut to size (once I have some more sleepers add on top) Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So hopefully the next update will be better news... |

OK so finally some good news...
The supplier of he workshops fitters... were how can I put it nicely... Useless, after a few trips up telling me the brickwork is out then not then out... I finally had enough with them and said I will fit it with my guys.. I'm not naming the company, but on the slightest chance 'they' see this I don't want them using my pictures as publicity. Hence my poor attempt at a watermark So My electrician friend and jack of all including his Joiner mate who together do house extensions helped. First bit... The build starts Click image to enlarge It soon grows quite quickly Roof was fun, attaching the panels... Click image to enlarge I'm very impressed given I did the retaining wall and made it up as I went that the windows are ideal for the garden view Click image to enlarge Happy so far and its going up well Click image to enlarge |

Looking great. The attitude of the supplier unfortunately does not surprise me. Excuses not to work vs finding reasons to do an honest days work.....
