I'd expect you to be able to smell diesel in the oil. Darren

I'm not sure that you would with a TDCi, this tends to be a TD5 symptom. The TD5 has the fuel rail incorporated into the head as a gallery within the casting, and the injectors therefore have two seals, the copper washer to seal the cylinder/injector interface and an "O"-ring to seal the gallery and prevent leakage from the gallery past the injector into the rocker space. Lubricant dilution with fuel on a TD5 is most commonly caused by the "O"-ring leaking. The TDCi has an external fuel rail and hence should be more or less immune from the lubricant dilution mechanism above. Leaking seals on the TDCi will cause cylinder gasses to blow past the injectors and will generally result in smoky vapours from the breather system, oil being blown into the induction passages, and oil leaks from the top cover. It won't result in fule in the lubricant however. Lubricant dilution with fuel on the TDCi is generally the result of a dribbling injector overfuelling a cylinder (or more than one injector overfuelling more than one cylinder) so that incomplete combustion takes place, a damaged piston or bore resulting in no combustion taking place, leaving fuel in the cylinder, or, for the 2.2 version only, a problem wit the DPF regeneration cycle. The first two of these (but not the DPF issue, of course) can also happen to a TD5. |

I couldn’t smell diesel, but as Blackwood explained this may not be a symptom. What I found was that the area around the 4th injector looked “wetter” than the rest. I also took the oil filler cap off and it was definitely puffing a bit. I held my hand over the hole for a second and got a fair bit on the glove. Is this the norm though?

I had an oil leak and it turned out to be these LR018370. The main dealer automatically assumed it was the injector seals and changed them but that was not the case. Same number for the 2.2 and the 2.4. Click image to enlarge https://www.lrdirect.com/LR018370-Seal/?keep_https=yes Here is a choice of makes. In this case, a compression test may help |

Thanks Julie. Off to a specialist on Friday for a second opinion. My soon to be ex-garage just uttered the fateful words; it’s a defender, they all leak!

2.4 TDCi. I didn't know my injector seals were leaking but there was an unpleasant oily/fume smell coming through the vents, now replaced this has been cured.
