I'm now geting to the point where I'm odering parts (bearings, seals, gaskets etc etc) on a daily basis and find that there is a large variation in prices, I'm guessing this is down to the quality of the item.

I've never been involved with any build that has sooooo many different suppliers, and is a welcome relief as not spending time looking for rare parts.

This is a very difficult question to phrase but I guess I'm asking is there a particular supplier that is a good compromise between price and quality.

I recently priced up all the parts needed for the axles from JLR and it was over £4,000, which led me to this question.

Been doing a bit more work on the tub, bulkhead flange removal, not pretty but will be covered in carpet, hopefully it's strong.

Prep ready for forward facing rear seat mod.

Andy, you know whats it's like, I'm going to try, using the YRM parts, looks quite straight forward, any advice welcome. Your build is looking awsome and a source of inspiration and ideas.

Chassis, engine and gearbox are due to arrive in two weeks time and then the fun really starts....

Thank god dry January is over.... bet you thought I'd missed that comment, made me laugh

Regarding parts suppliers, I've had nothing but good experiences with shop4autoparts. They are run by EAC parts and are incredibly helpful. Would recommend you go for OEM parts where available, genuine is most likely unnecessary and the price difference usually only equates to an LR box...

Some Britpart parts are good quality and offer a healthy saving over genuine, the difficulty comes in determining which bits. As a general rule, for anything that moves or seals I opt for OEM/Timekn/Corteco, all of which Britpart supply. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

If you want it to work, not leave a puddle on the floor or kill you I would avoid Brit####! Definitely Gen for swivel housings as most of the aftermarket ones have had fatigue failures over the years. Even innocent things like door seals make all the difference from JLR.

Agree on the door seals, I tried some aftermarket recently and couldn’t get the doors to close Big Cry . Andy

thanks for the help, keep the comments coming as every comment makes me think about the build in a different way and consider other options.

Got a large delivery of YRM parts today so should keep me in work at the weekend.

Got the tub stripped a little bit more

and the floor test fitted

And the excitment level has risen due to the arrival of the first engine/trans package pictures. This package should leave the states tomorrow and be with me in around a week

I finally made a decision on the brakes and have opted for the 405mm discs with 8 and 6 pot calipers.

I've nearly ammassed all the parts for the ABS conversion as well and have sorted the TPMS out.

Still on the lookout for a XS bulkhead loom if anyone has any leads, ive tried a quite a few places but no one ever gets back to me, very frustrating.

This build is looking fantastic. I cannot fathom pulling a whole Defender apart and back together. The ultimate project. How do you know where everything goes afterwards. Amazing stuff.

Love watching the progress. It's gonna be a ripper when it's done. I think the 18" would be ideal if you're putting big brakes in. Can't imagine anything bigger on a 90. The bigger wheels look less out of place on 110's and 130's, even then, 18 looks as big on those.

You keeping the colour as is? The green looks great.

Sympathise with you parts sourcing frustration. I'm currently buying a range of parts, spending decent amounts. So many companies/suppliers ignore emails. Strange business model, if your selling stuff, sell it - that's all you need to do... don't make it difficult or impossible for customers to give you their money!

Keep up the great work! Bow down

I'm interested to hear how you are getting ABS to work? Are you getting the required engine signals from the LS ECU or are you running it through the OEM diesel ECU?

As for the fitting of rear seats, I remember watching a video from Masai on retrofitting. They said that you need to align the seats with the cutouts in the window trim in order for them to fold away correctly, it might be worth a watch. 1989 90 4.3 V8

Hi Matt,

I did watch that and was very concerned fixing seats directly to a 2/3mm piece of Ali, no subfame and no fixings back to the chassis. I am absolutly no expert but even with my limited knowledge it seems wrong. (perhaps there are parts not shown in the video).

Compare that against OE or the YRM kit both have a steel subframe and both connects to the chassis.

Your advice on the location is good though, I've taken the distance of the floor fixings from the original so hopefully it will end up in the OE position as I dont have any trims yet.

As for the ABS/TC, the new ECU will replace the LR ECU and connect to the GM ECU that way the standard cluster works and I get AC control as well and have even integrated (in theory at this time) a canbus tyre pressure monitoring system.

Cluster should look like this

Theory is all good but still need to get it all working in practice.

As for the question of colour that is the topic of the moment in our house right now....watch this space

Which ABS unit are you retrofitting? Bosch or Wabco?

I have looked into retrofitting the ABS system but without a stock Land rover engine ECU present I am struggling to replicate the signals required to get it to work – I am running standalone management.

Could you offer some advice on how you are getting the GM ECU and ABS ECU to communicate?

TMPS sounds like a very interesting install!!! That cluster looks very tidy, will it be able to display gear indicator? 1989 90 4.3 V8
