I’m puzzled by this continuing desire to compare two vehicles that are just not comparable; surely they’re entirely different other than in name only. Why some insist on comparing a 50, 60, 70+k car with something that, even when new, cost c. 30k including ‘extras’ mystifies me. If the new defender didn’t handle better on road, or leaked etc, after you’d paid 70k, you’d be pretty annoyed wouldn’t you? Surely these aren’t selling features???
Can we stop comparing what are clearly apples and pears (you get the point!). On a personal note and, yes, I am biased towards the old defender and feel like the new car kind of missed the point in price point at least; I’m just pleased my defender didn’t offer a “sparkle wheel” option  (just a joke for any overly sensitive new defender owners). |

For me the issue is not about comparing apples and oranges, it is the fact that there is a vehicle (New Defender) that purports to be a 'Defender' but actually only satisfies a fraction of the users of the old one. If the New Defender was available in a range of body styles at sensible prices then there would be no issue for me. Things always change over time.

^^^ Exactly. And in terms of some saying the Puma looks like an old tin can, at least it ‘looks’ like something and looks unique. Indeed it’s silhouette possibly being the most identifiable car on the planet and the reason LR tried to patent it. The new one may look like a shiny new aluminium can, but in doing so merely looks like every other modern, homogeneous SUV blob, of which JLR already had 8 variants and across the marketplace, and across all brands, probably 50. Four out of nineteen, and even the nineteen are only the mainstream ones (no snowploughs, no recovery vehicles, etc). Not such a versatile vehicle, really. Interesting that the two "130 Hydraulic Platform" versions have clearly different wheelbases!
I don't really see why we should stop, after all it was Landrover which started it by presenting the new vehicle as a successor (not just in name) to the classic Defender. It is unreasonable not to expect comparisons as a result. If they had called the new vehicle a Discovery almost all this debate bickering would not be taking place.
Give it time, I'm sure it will be an option one day (but at a price, no doubt)!  |

Hmmm, perhaps mine need testing too then. By sheer coincidence whilst out walking with SWMBO yesterday a new defender was driving towards us and we couldn’t work out if it was the disco or defender until it was quite close. It’s OK if we have different views you know  |

Maybe we shoul get a New defender dislike section in the classic defender space, where we can exchange our thoughts without been sent to the eye check or called stuck in the past.

Let us all keep civil and retain the good humour and good manners that makes this forum better than the rest, whilst acknowledging that we have (and will probably always have) different views. We can be an "inclusive" forum. |
