Hello

I have a sankey and with the help of a forum member we converted the 24v to 12v... I tried but I'm color blind. However even that didn't seem to mater as I split the wires they were all the same color and not labeled.

Works a treat and has done for years now.

There have been lots of variations of 'Sankey' trailer and they don't all tow the same. The original narrow tracks were pretty much level behind Series Land Rovers, although they typically had 6.50 tyres. The MkII widetrack was usually nose down as the trailer hitch is mounted on top of the chassis. By contrast, the MkIII widetrack had the trailer hitch in line with the chassis and towed more level. The newer Penmans have the hitch on top of the chassis again and I've never seen one that isn't slightly nose down behind a military 110 and more so behind a standard civvy spec.

Minor update,

Tub is off and chassis has been cleaned up then painted with Raptor and WAR from Buzzweld.

Next task is to place the order for GRP panels and captive corners to assemble the new body and repaint the wolf wheels.

The question is - Is there a market for selling the stainless tub, wooden grid and canvas cover?

Having moved the trailer around today for the first time in a while I'm fed up of lifting the spare wheel off to use the Nato hitch and I decided to sort out a spare wheel carrier.

Looks like the Safari-Equip one is the way to go in order to create a bit more space between the wheel and the Nato hitch. Does anyone have any experience of Ore 4X4 and if it offers better clearance on the Nato hitch? Keith

That’s the ore one mounted so you can see the space. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Started to build the new top section, making use of an empty local hall to get out of the winter weather.

14mm GRP ply boards for the walls and roof using an aluminium channel system.

Once I've got all the panels cut, sealed and dry assembled then it will be glued and riveted

These corner castings are an absolute nightmare though.

Looks like you are having fun, good luck getting the corners together.
Do you have any information on the products that you are using for this and the supplier of them?
Thanks

The materials are from a company called service metals. I'll post the part nos from the quote when I get home. Keith

That could be useful for a project later this year, if I ever have time! Thanks

It's 14mm play panels with a GRP finish on them.

Service metals code is GRP14 and it comes in 2.42m sheets, the Aluminium corner channels are CP18S.

Other than the cast corner pieces (which are a PITA) it's just a giant kit once you cut the panels to size. Rivets are on order, along with a long arm riveter given there's well over 100 to go in.

Final decision to be made on door sizes and positions next and then I'll get them ordered and cut the apertures to suit.

If the bitter temp rises next week I'll get onto the trailer electrics (not sure I fancy trying to crimp cables in these temps). Keith

Took the wheels off today to fit the spacers and managed to get an education on hub centric vs non hub centric spacers

The Penman hub will not take the hub centric spacer that I sourced so I'll need to get the inside of the spacer machined up to fit the 115mm diameter of the hub flange.

Think I'll get the wheels indoors and repainted black while I have them off and the weather is so cold outside.

Also ordered the Safari Equip spare wheel carrier (wonder if the snow is stopping shipping from Yorkshire).

At some point I'll have to get photos and post the canvas cover, duckboard, Penman tub, Mantec wheel carrier and Perei light fittings in the for sale section Keith

New spare wheel carrier arrived today (ordered at the start of the week).

Unfortunately left on the door step by the courier and he was gone before I could open the door. Damage to the box and 3 of the powder coated parts.

Cannot fault Brendan though, phoned up within about 30 mins of my email and I wouldn't want to be the courier if Brendan ever gets hold of him.

Should get resolved shortly by 4x4 overlander, and it's snowing so I wasn't going to fit it this weekend anyway. Keith

Lack of updates doesn't mean a lack of progress. Lockdown and a lack of scout activities gave me a bit of time to get on with this.

Chassis has been cleaned up and treated to a coating of buzzweld RE and WAR.

New 12V electrics and Wipac LED lights fitted.
Wolf wheels repainted and fitted onto machined spacers to give me a bit more space for the trailer body.

Final assembly of the composite panels was done indoors making use of an empty hall and the pre framed locker doors bonded in really easily.

Also managed to break the adhesive gun

Fitted the pull out fridge

Then moved it out the hall and onto the chassis

It's now off for paint and vinyl with the first mock ups back in for me to think over today. Pretty set on the contour lines idea but need to decide on a particular vector image and if I want to carry the design onto the back of the 110.

The design needs to work as a stand alone on the 110 given that it spends more time without the trailer than with it.

Not sure if the red line (meant to represent a path and give the design a bit of a pop) makes it look a bit too much like the A-team van.....

Hoping to have it back for May and I can then get the side runner/wheel arches and some roof bars fabricated Keith
