Ideas to modernize plastics on my 2009 110
After buying my 2nd hand Defender and going through the rollercoaster of emotions (what have I done / I love it / I hate it / I'll soon be bankrupt / etc) I am putting together a list of things to do and improve its appearance.

I'd like to first start by modernize/improve the plastics (headlamp surrounds, grille, wheel arches): is it possible to repaint them? I wanted to get a glossy black finish.
Is that possible? Am I better off just buying new ones?

Welcome to the forum Smile

It's definitely possible to paint them, although a gloss finish will be a harder one to achieve. I recently painted a set in a satin finish and that took a lot of time sanding and cleaning, which would be even more important for a gloss finish. It really depends on your ability and time available versus the cost of buying new. Darren

Hi Darren, thanks for the reply!
I have quite a few tools for sanding and I am not scared to invest a few hours in this.
I have a lot of upgrades I'd like to do, and I'd like to save a few bucks here.

Maybe the satin finish is the smarter choice!

Welcome to the forum Thumbs Up Great looking Defender! I feel your rollercoaster, I was just the same 6 years ago, now i have 3 Shocked

You can certainly spray paint. For best result remove and and get professionally painted!! But DIY is very possible with good results. I'm no expert but have had a play with spray paninting myselfand quite enjoy it. I googled spray painting plastic car part and found a great video to follow. It's all about prep, rub down, clean, primer, top coat, laqueur. Lots of thin layers is much better than laying on too thick. Gloss black/santorina will show any blemishes.

A lot of people roller paint so it will look better than than.

Good luck, keep us posted! Thumbs Up James

I have the unpainted ones on mine, albeit its a 2015. I used a white magic sponge thing (stolen from my wife's supply) with some degreaser to rub down the plastic. Came up quite nice and took some of the marks out. The used Gtechniq C4 which gets them back nice and black and seems to last

Chiswick green and gloss black is in my opinion one of the best colour combinations... look forward to following your progress Thumbs Up

I think if your panting them you may need a plastic primer coat once you have given them a good rubdown key.

Also, don’t worry about bankruptcy, you can enjoy it in the knowledge that they hold their value very well, better than having money sat in the bank Thumbs Up Ride like you stole it!!

Have you tried some shoe polish? It works magic, but maybe not long lasting.
Be careful that whatever you do to the grille and headlamp finishers, you might have to do to the wheel arches (also called eyebrows sometimes).

The truck already looks very nice in an original unmolested condition. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

wow thanks everybody for the great suggestions.
I have a bit to think about it, I'm not planning to do anything during wintertime anyway.

I'll also consider how everything will blend together: among the changes I also plan to get some black sawtooth 16x7 wheels w/ BFG tires and (very unlikely) pain the top and make it black as well.

I know that this last bit might sound like a sacrilege to many, but the result might approach this:

Without the other 100k worth of mods of course....

Or there is the more utilitarian look...something along these lines:

I had my grille and surrounds sprayed gloss black and arches done body colour. Nothing worse than the tired faded black plastic. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews

I really like the sawtooths, but personally I find that they fit more on the silver, greys, and black body colour, and Fuji white with black accents.
But if course it is a matter of taste.

I am a fan of the heavy duty steel rims. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I initially sprayed grill and light surrounds "body colour" although the Keswick Green I bought looked nothing like Keswick Green once it had dried! I would have been happy doing them black myself but having not done much spraying before and having a habit of f***ing things up, I decided to get a pro to do the arches and front bits at the same time. I should have got them to refit the arches for me because they are an absolute arse to get on and I ended up cracking the paint.

The one thing I did spray myself is the centre console when I did the stereo. Pretty pleased with how it turned out and holding up pretty well. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews
