Mine is warmed up within four miles or so of gentle driving, it would be quicker on faster roads.

Torque is more important to me than HP so the diesel is the way to go.

Diesel for me, as said torque is where it’s at for me. Never had any issues with them warming up, they warm up pretty quickly. Also never had problems with the AdBlue system, the 90 will be my 4th LR with AdBlue.

We are getting to a stage where neither engine will be welcome in towns and cities. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

A diesel engine seems best for an off-road vehicle with the additional torque and low-rev pulling power. And with the D250 being six-cylinder, I imagine is very smooth.

I wonder is the re-sell of the diesel will be better too - appeals more to the wider Defender audience.

A petrol Defender seems like an oxymoron to me.

Only out of necessity. They fitted diesels as soon as they became practical (and even before in some cases). Darren

In the past diesels were simple and reliable. The problem with modern diesels is the emission controls make life much more difficult. In particular DPFs need to benefit from a decent run to burn off all the soot. Otherwise there are tiresome problems. So for me I worry that lots of relatively short journeys and bits of offroading are likely to lead to trouble and so petrol is now my preference.

Ignoring the mpg side of diesel vs petrol, the problem I’d have with the latter is that for a large slice of the car’s mileage it would be overseas sur l’continent. Diesel is usually significantly cheaper where I tend to go, and en route there.

That’s my destination when we get to travel beyond the UK. It’s the last of the Great lighthouse Capes I have to get to to complete my round of the Great Capes. I was hoping to do it by sea like the others but when I did a Classic Hurtigruten Cruise in 2016 the weather wasn’t so good and we went south of the island that Nord Kap is on......
I’ve already been round Capes Farewell (south Greenland), Good Hope, Horn and Leuwin by sea Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

It’s a great mid point on an Arctic road trip. My thoughts on next one is up to Tallinn via Germany, Poland & Baltics, over the water to Helsinki then right to the Rooskies border and follow Via Karelia north, then up past Lake Inari to Kirkenes, to N Cape and down the coast to Batterie Deitel, across the mountains to the spine of Sweden and back via the bridges through Denmark and south. About a 3 week jolly.

All speculative at the mo as I don’t see borders being open, and stable, for a good while. Sad

I’ve been to Kirkenes and driven from there to the Schengen/Russian border crossing even though the border goes down several streets in Kirkenes there’s no border checks until you get to the big fence with all the guard towers along it....... the Russians used to come to Kirkenes for food shopping in the many supermarkets and the Norwegians did the fuel buying across the Russian border as it was about 1/10 the price in Russia. Any Russian or Norwegian living within 20kms either side of the border had visa free crisping rights! Didn’t apply to any other nationality though.

Some great wild camping spots around that area, Grense Javobselv being one of the best. Interesting going past heavily armed Norwegian border guards then pitching camp in sight of Rooskie watch towers. Thumbs Up
