With the LS in that is going to fly!

Thanks for all the recommendation about suppliers they have been really useful.

This project is really getting a move on now with some major decision made and orders placed, so this is where I'm at

Chassis

I've ordered a galvanised Marsland adapter chassis, should be with me in around 4 weeks

Engine

I've ordered the LT1/8L90E from Turnkey engine supplies with all ancillaries, electronics, this will be test ran before being shipped to me, will be with me in around 6 weeks’ time.

Drive train

Lots of help here from Nigel at Xcess 4x4 and Tom at Winchester gears.

Front diff - Big bearing case, pegged, Oil vane upgrade, ultra build spec, superflange upgrade, quaife ATB

Rear Diff - AS front but not big bearing case

Rest - Ashcroft 300M drive shafts, Ashcroft HD CV's, Ashcroft HD drive flanges

TC - Stage 2 LT230 with Quaife ATB from Winchester Gears

Suspension

Lots of help here from Ian at IRB

vb 4 corner air suspension system with adjustable fox shocks plus ARB's bushes etc etc

Started to buy some of the Parts I need for the upgrade to ABS and TPMS

Brakes

Torn between the Ceika 8 (front) and 6 (Rear) pots with 405 discs or the 6 pot AP kit from IRB, these will take around 4 weeks to arrive so need to get a move on.

Axles are now stripped and will be sandblasted next week

Also, all of the nuts, bolts and brackets will be going to the platers next week.

I'm still on the lookout for an XS bulkhead wiring loom and full AC system if anyone has any leads on these.

Andy,

I am moving on at some rate due to the inspiration from your thread, keep the updates coming, may need some advice very shortly... Smile

the wheels are one of the issues with the brakes, the bigger brakes require 20's, and I've only been able to find two neither really float my boat. I think with the AP's I can run 18's with lots more choice.

I'm in touch with a chap waiting for his Ceika kit to arrive and he has the Khan 20 rims, so I'm waiting to see how he gets on. I'm also a little concerned about the brakes with 8 and 6 pots and the amount of fluid being moved under braking and whether the LR system could cope.

These are the 6 pot fronts with the smaller 356 rotors, if I have 20's I could install the 405 rotors

Philip, The accessory kit is part of the package from Turnkey, they are using the TK Hi Mount ac set. There is quite a bit of STUFF they do to the standard engine to make it fit and work

Personally I would go 18". Defenders on 20's, more so a 90 start to look all out off proportion IMO Andy

litle bit more progress, got the bulkhead finished ready to go to the sandblasters and the galvanisers later this week.

Both axles now stripped awaiting sand blasting

Whilst I'm waiting for bits decided to get on with restoring the tub, YRM here I come....

Plan to

install bulkhead removal bar
Replace the floor
Galvanise as many of the steel parts as possible
Fix the rot

By what I've read this is quite standard

I have no experience of these but overall doesnt seem to be too bad, interested to see what I find when I take the floor off. I am suprised how little protection there is to the tub though.

Galvanising the bulkhead is a good idea, but I'd look at having it chemically stripped instead of blasted. They are in my experience painted internally (though the fact they rust at such an alarming rate would have you believe otherwise) besides the galvanisers cursing you for contaminating their tank, it can negatively impact the quality of the finish. In my experience, if the blasting process has missed a crevice, leaving paint on the item, you end up with a neither galvanised nor painted section which will corrode nicely!!

Also take note of all thread sizes where nuts are captive, they can be cleaned easily with a bit of gentle heating (to soften the galv) and a good set of taps and dies, but can be stripped just as easily if you're not careful. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

That body is a bit excessive for a Puma more like what you find on a TDi/TD5 nothing that cant be sorted with YRM bits. just make sure you insulate the alloy to YRM steel bits. Its worth making a frame bolted to the bulkhead feet and check strap points to keep the bulkhead square whilst galving. also put some holes in the bottom of the footwell ribs to allow the galv inside.

Thanks for the advice.

The bulkhead is now at Enviro-strip and the tub is starting to be sorted, just waiting for YRM to get some of the repair panels back in stock.

Floor now removed

Question, which I can't seem to find an easy answer to..... With the steel now removed where it was in contact with the ali, galvanic corrosion will now not happen, but what about the white residue/powder, does that need to be neutralised in some way. I've ground out as much as possible but can't seem to get rid of it 100%, is this a problem if I just coat over it with my epoxy coating ???

I've started doing the bulkhead removal but decided I dont like the way you end up with a flanged end so I plan to make external and internal trims and make the ends smooth, It will untimatley be covered in carpet but should look so much better.

Looking good all you can do with the white powder is cut out or hole saw any really bad areas and etch prime, then apply something like Buzzweld WAR followed by Lanogaurd on both surfaces before fitting the steel YRM repair sections.

Lots of lovely bits going into this.
Just a word of warning be careful with the tub sides while you are working on the tub as they are quite expensive if you damage them and a lot more work involved than the other bits on the tub. But if you plan on changing them anyway way not to worry.
