thanks, still not on the road as yet!

where theres that risk ive either gone with plastic washers or duralac or both sometimes. Thumbs Up

My tub was that bad in parts (like seat belt anchors) that I had to replace quite a lot of it with YRM parts which are over engineered with thicker metals so not expecting an issue too soon lol

Got everything off the inside bulkhead so that it could be removed

Now thinking about galvanising the chassis, I'd really like to keep this chassis as it's in good codition and I'm mindful of the implications of a new chassis around DVLA.

Is it worth galvanising or better to buy a new one????

If it’s in fairly decent condition it’s obviously better to get yours galvanised. You might struggle getting someone to do it. If you can collect all your stuff together then do it as a bigger job at the galvaniser that might be best.

No reason not to galvanise the chassis you have, but be mindful that any good galvaniser will reject items with even the tiniest amount of paint/grease on them. I'd look into having the chassis chemically stripped to remove all contaminants from inside and out. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

If it is a new chassis as opposed to one off another vehicle there should be no implications.

I've got an defender conversion underway with BMW M57 and ZF 8 speed auto, to be fair it's 'nearly finished'. If you have any questions regarding the ZF or anything else do drop me a line.

You may have noticed a change in the title, After talking to various manufacturers/suppliers over the past few months, universally there have been questions over the technical viability of a T56 manual conversion (I know of only 1 that has been done).

The major challenge is making the adapter from the T56 to the LT230, even when suppliers say they can do it, they are probably not aware that the T56 is not 4WD compatible and the adapter though not impossible is a challenge. I know Rakeway have made one but as they will not return my calls or emails thus I’m guessing they are not that interested in making another.

The further challenge is that the T56 is 130mm longer that the standards autos used for the normal LS swap, so it's a bit of an unknown as to where everything is going to end up, particularly the gearstick and LT230.

Finally, a comment that has been made by nearly all, is that the manual will be less sympathetic to the drive train (I know it's how you drive it as well LOL) and that an auto will probably be more suitable.

I'm absolutely no expert and all I can go on are the comments I have received.

I've also changed to the more modern LT1 instead of the LS3 as I understand the LS3 is about to stop production. I'm also going for the 8-speed auto (8L90) in truck configuration where there are numerous available adapters.

This change is a little more costly, I'm hopeful it will be a smoother ride.

I think you have made a wise choice with engine /trans the manual option always feels like a handful in a high powered Defender particularly under hard acceleration between gear changes. Handling and traction are much improved if the driveline remains loaded during gearchanges as it does with auto trans. I would recommend using a new Marsland galv chassis as these are galv from new and dont have any issues with rust and old paint inside the box sections. Chassis replacement would also remove any accident misalignment worries.

Been in touch with Karl at Marsland, just waiting for him to send me an invoice. I cant remember exactly what he called it but I'm getting their "Utility" chassis as it suited to the LT1 mounts which I can get from RW's in the states.

Got the chassis apart from the axles

This is who I approached for the T56 conversion a while back... the price was £6k+.

Before I butcher the steering lock is there a method for removing the steering column from the bulkhead.

You will need to drill out the fixing bolts for the ignition barrel/steering lock clamp. They are sheer bolts and you will need new ones to refit it. P/N QRH100030 1989 90 4.3 V8

Me too, totally love them, I hadn't seen one for years and years till about 5 years ago , when they were filming outside our house for "Reg" starring Tim Roth. The guy who was running security had parked his black one opposite our house...very nice motor
