Penman brake pads

Do any of you Penam owners know what brake pads are fitted to the Penman lightweight trailer? I’m doing an expedition conversion on one but having real trouble tracking down where to get pads from. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Jim

Hi Rosco many thanks for your reply. I’m not sure if the Sankey used the same pads as Penman. I’ll take the old set out and compare them to the pic in the link you sent. I’ll report back. Strangely for such a widely used trailer I’ve not been able to find any guidance at all on t’internet

Before you throw your hands in the air and decide that I have gone barmy (after all the slider is clearly marked "top" at the top suggesting that it must be used one particular way up), this suggestion was actually made to me by the boffins a Dixon Bate back in the day when DB not only had boffins but were actually knowledgeable and helpful, ie before the last take-over (after which they have raised unhelpful uselessness to an art form).

I wouldn't want to use the slider upside-down for a heavy trailer or one with an exceptionally high nose-weight, but a Penman or Sankey is a puny trailer by trailer standards and the coupling loadings are not large.

Had a look and the slider is different. 4 holes at the top to bolt through the crossmember and two at the bottom for the chassis legs. Could be adapted by welding a plate at the bottom position for the extra holes then reverse (if you follow me). If I decide to get one I might try it 'as is' first. 1984 One-Ten CSW

By slider I mean the bit to which the NATO pintle is bolted, not the bit bolted to the chassis.

Pull the pin to release the NATO pintle from the vehicle, invert the pintle, re-pin to vehicle, release the rotation lock on the pintle (which will now be at the top), rotate the pintle through 180 degrees, hitch up the trailer, and Bob will become your uncle.

Hi all, a couple of questions that I just know you have the answers to

Pintile arrangement.
Seriesonenut , after following Blackwolf’s suggestion re inverting the slider and then rotating pintile 180 degrees were you able to couple the trailer with the spare wheel on, or did it require spare wheel removal ?

I’ve ordered one of these. https://foundry4x4.co.uk/index.php?route=p...uct_id=352 .
Designed for mounting larger diameter wheel/ tyre combinations it raises the wheel by 2 inches so hopefully will mitigate raising the pintile hight and may help those with pintiles directly connected to the crossmember who also have a rear mounted wheel. Will reduce view through rear screen but that’s minimal already. Once fitted I will post my findings.

Rewiring to add 12n plug and 12v bulbs.
I’m about to purchase a penman. Will collect with 6ft lightboard. However I will be changing the bulbs on the penman to 12v and add an additional cable and 12n 7 pin plug to existing 12way nato cable and plug arrangement. Tapping in to connector box under the trailer so I can avoid having the lightboard fitted for subsequent use. Any tips on this appreciated. Also are you able to just remove the 24v bulbs and replace with std 12v bulbs. Or are new bulb holders required.

Number plate.
Now this is a dumb question. But where is best to mount the number plate ? I can see the rear off side is where the military number plate fits but a standard legal square one looks too big to fit there and will get in the way of the rear tailgate opening. If you fit so it avoids the tailgate issue it looks like it will protrude beyond the edge of the trailer side ! So wondered what you guys do..

The bulbs can just be straight swapped out.

380 12V 21/5w for the stop tails

382 12 21w for the indicator and fog

501 5w capless for the front position lights

The junction box is 'Potted' or simply filled with a semi hard gunk to protect the electrics. There is a few posts on here about the right way to remove the NATO plug and wire in a 12N normal trailer plug. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

Just bought and collected a penman. Ex reserve stock, looks brand new and never been used, the tyres even have the little bobbles (Vent spews) still on them. Towed perfectly on the 100mile return trip, no sound at all from the hitch. I had to keep checking it was still there !
Now the decision. Keep in nato green, or paint to match defender!
