At the bottom of the plastic casing, near to the mount, there is a small hole. Use a narrow flat blade screwdriver in this hole to (carefully) pry out the glass lens. Then do the same with the metal reflector and hey presto you’re in.
Click image to enlarge When reassembling, please note there is a tiny lug on the edge of the glass lens that slots into the corresponding cut-out in the plastic bowl. |

Much obliged! I obviously need to try a bit harder. The metal in that area is rather crumbly so I'll probably need a new one anyway once it's off

I used to use these light all the time on my very first 90.... thought they were the dogs danglies (but they break easily where the balljoint is moulded into the lamp "head")
Then I discovered they were just lucas units and I could get them for about 1/3 the price that LR were charging. |

^^^ Available at very reasonable prices. It’s possibly not worth the pain of looking around for replacement parts or renovating. I bought two brand new (LR) units online for buttons!
Corrosion seems to be an issue so although mine were brand new, I sprayed additional coats of black paint then lacquer on the painted parts. Also stripped out the reflector to spray both sides with heat resistant clear lacquer. I’ve also replaced the bezel screws with stainless. OCD is an affliction! You can also replace the standard bulbs with LED equivalents if you’re that way inclined |

I wasn’t aware of this. That balljoint is a friction clamp. If it’s too loose, the light will slop around. If it’s too tight and the angle is adjusted often, this will strain and weaken the mount and no doubt lead to the failure Jim refers to. There is probably a “sweet spot” for torquing up the joint. However, I’ll simply clamp up at a useful angle and then leave it there. Thanks for the info Jim |

I replaced three in two years on a 90 I used to own, once they start to rust I found it was a waste of time and effort to even think if tidying them up, disconnect the feed cables and replace with something better that a Land Rover product. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Cheers all for the tips.
It’s looking like the reflector isn’t going to come out in one piece so I’ll start shopping around for a replacement and make sure it gets a good dose of silicone in addition to the naff foam gasket! |

That takes me back. In their day they were good but the mesh would flake and rust after not too long and then the reflector went and the rear switch never seemed to be far behind. Durites seemed to be the upgrade after that and now I wouldn't bother with anything less than a modern LED.

Yep, excellent lights with a great light spread
I had one on my S111 SWB V8 and then when I got the 101 I fitted a pair to the windscreen brackets. Agree about the mesh rusting but other than that they were very tough units. Still got two in the garage but with the progress of LED lights I can't see me ever fitting them to the 90. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |
