Home Insurance Recommendations
I've always had my home insured with NFU and whilst I know it's expensive I've always felt it's worth it.

Change in circumstance where we're renting out our house and needing contents on our new rental. NFU "yes no problem we can just change your existing policy" net result almost doubles annual premium to over £1k Shocked

So I'm looking around for GOOD home insurance companies? Complicated as our home is a barn conversion so not easy to insure.

Any recommendation gratefully received. TIA Thumbs Up James

After some hunting around recently I ended up with Halifax Home Insurance Ultimate, more cover than with Barclay’s previously, but 1/3 of the price.

NFU every year..For combined Buildings and Contents

proper personal insurance tailored to you.
Excellent claim settlement too... with low excesses.

certainly not the cheapest...but chasing the pounds on the comparison sites can be a a dangerous cost saver.
After all this is probably the most important insurance you will have

Clemmo Thumbs Up Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow....

Thank you for the comments so far. Not sure I'd resign myself to Saga just yet Laughing Halifax is a possibility as I bank with them and will try A-Plan as they offer discounts for exisiting customers.

Clemmo, that's exactly why I've been with NFU for 15 years, I just think doubling the premium for what is basically the same policy is a bit much. As we are now not occupying our own house we loose at our discounts. Frustrating. James

Did you make the enquiries through the call Centre of at the local branch ?
I know that when we acquired the 110 we were quoted a price by the local branch with the "just give us a call when you when you are at the garage and we will sort it out" but due to work we couldn't do it until a Saturday when the branch was closed, the call centre doubled the cost when we rang which was sorted out on the Monday by the branch. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Hi we live in a conventional brick and mortar home and have had house and contents insurance with Aplan for 25 years and have made 2 claims in that time and they have been faultless, I would definitely recommend giving them a try Thumbs Up Paul
I should of mentioned both of these claims were on contents Thumbs Up Paul

Tried my local NFU branch, I was wondering if the main call centre may fare better.

Good to hear recommendations for A-Plan, cant fault them on the Defender policies. James

Can't help with a recommendation but can I suggest you avoid Hastings Direct.
No sense of urgency when a tree fell on our oil tank a few months ago, causing a crack in the tank and a big risk of 2000 litres of heating oil flowing down the hillside. Paid out in the end but I had to move quickly and find someone myself to transfer the oil into a holding tank until the replacement was approved. Took many calls to Hastings and their loss adjustors over several days to get any action.

Just had a very similar thing with NFU.

Sold our house and temporarily renting so wanted to stop the buildings insurance but continue with contents. Had to be a new contents policy and it worked out to be more expensive than the buildings plus contents !

Now have contents with Halifax on their Ultimate policy. Much better cover and far cheaper than NFU. 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !!

Currently with Direct Line for Buildings & Contents.

However, not many companies will even quote us because we contract to Social Services to provide "Supported Accommodation" for vunerable young people/adults. Even then there are a fair few exclusions.

I use a broker called cornmarket https://www.cornmarketinsurance.co.uk/ Admittedly, I get discount with my union but they have been great the last 2 years. Better coverage than any comparison site and cheaper. The 1 claim I've made was sorted very quickly and professionally even with the problems Covid put in place.

Frustrating for sure...but I get it. Suddenly a couple of years ago NFU decided Defenders were "high risk"..premiums went up massively and made it prohibitive.
Ive claimed twice with NFU at home in 3 years and the settlement has been superb.

My opposite Neighbour had a house fire 7 months ago...They are still not living there due to insurance wrangles. Awful for them. He told me he always got the cheapest deal off the comparison sites and saved £100s...now he is fighting over £1000s Confused
