This issue is the reason why Mitsubishi shoguns have mostly redundant light clusters on the C pillar and a rather cheap looking cluster let into the lower bumper below the rear door. I think Maybe Disco 1s and Isuzu Troopers had something similar, so other manufacturers of similar vehicles have had to implement workarounds in the past. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I knew I wasn't going gaga so I asked over on the D2 forum & they've confirmed that to overcome this problem with the D1 LR fitted a small red light & a reflector to the edge of the door.
This example is from 1991 so in the 29 years that have elapsed between it rolling off the production line & Tim getting his, LR have not worked this one out! Click image to enlarge |

There was plenty of room on the Disco door to fit the reflector and light. On L663 you would have to remove the warning sticker to fit anything

It is interesting that they did this on the original Discovery (now known as the Discovery I) but did not do it on the Discovery II. I wonder why that was. My Disco II (pre-face-lift) doesn't even have a handy warning sticker about the obscured rear lights. Pre-face-lift vehicles have the indicators and reversing lights in the bumper and the tail, brake, and fog lights in the pillars which are therefore obscured by the open door. The post-face-lift vehicles had the tail lights moved to the bumper so they were not obscured, and I always understood that this change was done specifically to allow the lights to be seen. |

Sorry Blackwolf, that's not quite right. The original DII had indicators and fog lights in the bumper whilst the facelift version had reverse and fog lights. In the latter, the side lights were moved to the top of the cluster, presumably to make them more visible above the spare wheel.
Original: Facelift: When the Discovery I was facelifted with the introduction of the 300tdi engine, the side lights and indicators were replicated in the bumper and it was a simple and common mod to turn the bumper side lights into stop/tail ones, giving four brake lights. Yes, thank you, LRA, I must have been experiencing a senior moment when I wrote that (especially since I have a D2 parked out the back and have often cursed the uselessness of the reversing lights). Thank you for correcting me!
It is however clearly very traditional for Landrover vehicles to have doors which obscure the rear lights. |

I'm not sure that they were, at least within the letter of the law. The DII lights were deliberately moved further up the rear columns so that they'd be visible above the spare wheel when the door is open. I think they improved it when the facelift version was introduced but I'm sure that the original layout complied.
Regardless though, the new Defender does seem like a step backwards in this regard. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Well found! Will dealers be giving everyone a temporary lamp to stick on the door handle. I doubt JLR will do a recall to fix it unless pushed by Government legislation to do so or a class action through the courts for selling defective non compliant products.

It’s not up to dealers. They didn’t build the car.
The Grenadier from what I’ve seen suffers the same issue. |

It suffers the same on both sides by the look of it as the small section of the split rear door obscures the left hand rear lights too! It is extremely unlikely that a vehicle which is illegal by design would make it through EWVTA and into production, so I suspect that it is legal even if we cannot presently explain how.
Similarly I have no doubt that by the time the Grenadier enters production it too will have EWVTA and will be legal. |
