Sounds very similar to my 2.2, never thought it was a problem.

Thanks chaps. There's clearly something amiss though, because of the occasional power drops that accompany the noise. Regardless though, it's in the garage now so I'll hopefully find out more later. Darren

Ok, I'm an idiot. Or oversensitive, or possibly both. Despite plugging it in, giving it a good look over and test drive, they couldn't find anything wrong. The noise, apparently, is just the actuator for the turbo vanes working and whilst they didn't actually say 'they all do that, sir,' it was definitely implied
On the plus side, kudos to Challenger 4x4 for not charging me anything for this little escapade. In the drive home, it behaved impeccably Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? That must have completely passed me by, unfortunately. The only other related stuff I'd come across was in connection with the EGR valve, but that was replaced on mine last year.

At least it's extra reassurance for the rest of us. So far no one has said mine made that noise just before <something> happened

So, despite all that I said above, this issue has still been niggling me. The occasional power hiccup and the odd noises convinced me that there was still something wrong. As a bit of a gamble therefore, I've replaced the turbo actuator and lo and behold, normal service has been resumed. Took it for a long test drive this morning to get it good and hot, and couldn't replicate the symptoms at all.
I can only assume that the actuator was sticking at one end of its' travel and then snapping back, hence the sound like a valve closing. I'll try and strip down the old one to see if there's anything obvious. I was concerned that it might be a fault with the turbo itself but with the actuator removed, the linkage was completely free to move with no sign of anything sticking. Anyway, fingers crossed... Interesting narrative, sounds like you ‘knew’ in your gut something wasn’t quite right and it’s likely turning out to be true!

Yeah, kind of.
I've now stripped apart the old unit but disappointingly, there's no smoking gun. The inside is as clean as a whistle and when I applied 12v to the motor, it ran smoothly in both directions, albeit noisily one way. I'll just have to see how it goes. Do you still have the strange sound or the replacement actuator sort it? WARNING.

Some time ago my actuator stuck on full boost (the well known chafed harness fault) and the induction noise was extremely spectacular!
