It's fairly common, and not illegal, for US dealers to charge hefty "Additional Dealer Markups" on brand new domestic or imported models that are, at least initially, expected to be in high demand, especially along the coasts where lots of the, uh, beautiful people live and don't blink when asked to pay $10, 20, 30K or whatever the market will bear above sticker (aka MSRP, Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price), just so that they can be seen in that vehicle before the... other beautiful people in their neighborhood.

That was true for the Defender as well (I was offered a first edition at $20k above sticker myself several weeks ago when my local dealer got his very first 3 or 4 first editions in), and although I had a good laugh and told them I'd much rather wait for my order to arrive at the end of August, someone else probably bit the bullet. This practice is generally short lived on anything but exotics and/or unusually enduring popular models, especially imports that arrive in smaller numbers.

Rather different from:

I was told people in America are going nuts over the new defender and paying way over list price just to get them.

Remember this is aimed at the US market not Europe.

Well on that group @supacat if you bother to go look, you will also see the guy who took his back for a minor fault to be fixed and was stopped and asked if he wanted to sell for 5k over what he paid.
So as much as it pains you, it appears yea people are going nuts over them in America and paying over retail and heres you going nuts in the uk but for a very different and obviously reason Rolling with laughter

Could that have been a dealer just stroking his ego?

Zed has already shown you how many are available in US at list or below.

Are you still struggling to discern the truth between these two views for the UK market:

My local land rover told me a few weeks ago that they were selling faster than they could get them and yesterday when i was on the phone to the manger about my fault with the alarm, he said that he had not seen that problem with the new defender and said that they had sold just 6 of them.

So a new Defender is for someone who wants the image that a Wrangler portrays, but doesn't want the "discomfort" of it's road manners, and can't afford a G Wagen?

He said it not me, and I would generally agree with his opinion that Ford had Jeep
in their sights based upon it being a US market drive, no RHD , etc , hey but do not
let it stop you kicking off against someone who likes the new Defender..

Maybe Martin should change the group name name to MY20 Defender haters yet another pommie bar steward down under
