Ireland 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Stornoway Grey
The VRT loophole in Ireland has been closed !
when I picked up mine yesterday the dealer said I was the last customer on their books to avail of the 13.3 % VRT.
The Revenue apparantly contacted LR Ireland and told them to stop classifying 7 seaters as N1 although exsisting customers would be OK . They simply gave them a cut off date.
So if I was to buy mine again today I'd be paying an extra 15k and 2100 road tax. I feel relieved and smug at the same time.

Assume N1 = commerical ?

We have similar in England although its based of Window tax.

If you have rear windows its a car.

If you cover them up its a van.

It is true though for car-derived-vans such as the defender. Only physical differnece is the windows. I allways carry seats in the load area of mine as well and for health and safety reasons they are bolted down to stop them moving Thumbs Up

Must admit I agree with Pom's sentiments about a window tax....

I was going to get one next year, maybe not now? Is it only the 7 seater? are the 5 seats still N1?

I'd check with your dealer Conor. It was a grey area to begin with in the sense that its registered as a 5 seater but with a 7 seat 'option pack'. In your case the key question for the dealer would be whether it would be classified on the vehicle registration document as N1 as all the benefits follow on from this

Confirmed, unfortunately. Both 110 and 90 stationwagons are now M1 and never should have been classified as N1.Just a loop hole that was legally exploited but has now been firmly closed. Pity as there would be a lot more tax revenue on ten Defender station wagons sold at the N1 rate than none sold at the M1 rate.Then again commonsense never came into these things. For anyone who benefited during the brief N1 classification period congratulations. All the best to you Rossy and do not forget your parachute wnen-if- you come down off cloud 9. Unfortunately the missus kind of made it her own as soon as I got back from the dealer so as usual I'll only get it when the angels need to put in the magic juice that makes it go.
Not normally impulsive but I knew this oportunity was too good to miss. Not suprised the revenue axed it so feel very lucky

just had the same with classifying my 110 on import. they made classed my 110 xs as M1 and Light 4x4 utility ...

i told them i wanted is changed to either "N1 / light 4x4 util" or "M1 / Estate"

... they gave me m1/estate - so not classed as commercial, which may work out better in the long run as commercials pay more for toll roads/bridges and like 200/300's if commercial are excluded from the LEZ in 2012 onwards
