2.4 oil consumption
Hello All,

Can someone please advise me why my Defender 90 2.4 2008 with 47000 miles on the clock still consumes ~ 2 litres of engine oil in 3000 miles. There is a short black smoke when accelerating on the 4th and 5 th gear...

So far I have installed a new turbo as I found oil in the pipe to the intercooler.

Except from the oil consumption it runs as it should; No knocking, no power loss, no increased fuel consumption.

Thanks in advance
Rob

Thats a lot of oil!

Mine doesn't use any, nothing at all i have never had to top up (unless after service once its settled.

i presume you have checked for leaks underneath? and around the oil filter, sump and plug 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Do a bit of a search on injector seals.
They sit on a copper washer that is prone to causing a few issues

Great, many thanks!
I removed the cover and found as shown on the picture. Doesn´t look strange to me...

It looks wet around the injectors? Esp 3?

A diagnosis is obv difficult on here but the parts to replace the seals are cheap so i would be doing them next if it was mine.

It’s been a couple of years since I did one but if I remember correctly it’s not a bad job to do if you go steady.
You don’t need to replace the fuel lines.
Just the copper washers plus new stretch bolts and I seem to remember replacing some small rubber o rings on a few pipes.

I used a small file/seating type tool to clean up where the washers sit.

I will put a bit more info up when I got a bit more time

Hope you get it sorted

Thanks. It is for sure wet there but can it explain the excessive oil consumption?

Mine has 70K miles on it and uses none between changes.

The injector seals leaking aren't causing that much loss - in fact I believe they are leaking combustion product not oil as such.

With zero frame of reference with your particular vehicle does it smoke at all? Smoke on overrun would suggest valve guide oil seals, smoke under load could be oil being burnt, providing it's the right colour (blue-ish I believe?).

I don't believe excessive oil consumption is common on these engines though, so worth investigating. Others may have more / better ideas.

Mine turned out to be a snafu'd turbo....

Oil leaking from inter-cooler pipework junctions and also getting past the turbo seals, exiting as smoke via the zorst.
