It seems to happen...
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic47818....=rust+sump You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

It's not uncommon on most cars, it gets pelted with stones and chips the paint.
Fiat's for example are horendous for it, it's just most modern cars have acoustic under trays to shield the sump from stones these days. Should be an easy job to replace on a defender, they're not normally difficult on ordinary cars. |

Had quite a few deep rust spots on 07 defender sump. Chipped off carefully using cold chisel. Treated and painted . Coated with bilt hamber wax and seems to have stopped the rust meantime. Anyone with a puma should check the sump before it empties seven litres of oil over the driveway.

A quick look online suggests it's about £120 for a genuine Land Rover one or £80odd for a Bearmach one.
https://www.lrdirect.com/LR007598-Pan-Engine-Oil/ I would expect to get it cheaper than that with a discount at your local friendly main dealer. at £100ish i'd think twice about messing about patching up a rust holed one, there's no reason a new one can't be given an extra coat of paint before fitting. Surface rust should be easily dealt with if caught early though, clean off with a flap wheel and a good coat of tough thick paint. |

I recently replaced a a steel sump pan. Before fitting the new one I painted it with black chassis paint and then covered it in a couple of coats of stone chip.
It's inevitable that your sump is going to be blasted with tarmac chippings and the like so you'll have to resign yourself to the fact that until you convert to an EV you're always going to have the problem. Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

Is it more exposed on the puma? I’ve some rust spots on my 2014 as well and that’s been regularly under sealed from new...
I’m not sure I buy the stone chip argument; my front diff pan is perfect and is lower to the ground than the sump and has a far bigger area to receive incoming stone chips..? 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2 |

I think it's just poor quality steel and thin with poor coating , use mine off road a bit but keep it clean under chassis etc. 2014 2.2 90 hard top , Warm M8000 , Scorpain winch bumper, Ashcroft rear atb

In my opinion the rusty sump issue on the Pumas is nothing to do with stone chips, it's more down to very thin paint applied in a dip tank on top of poorly treated steel. When I grit blasted my 2011 sump it was clear there were grease spots on the sump and pretty much every other painted bracket on the engine before paint was applied.
In one of my videos I show removing paint with my finger nail and exposing bare steel beneath. To all you guys who are contemplating extra coats of paint and stonechip, I suggest you quickly go over the sump with some coarse emery paper to remove any "non-keyed" paint from the surface, whether your sump is new or old.
