If you think “Classic” Defender was the goose that laid the golden eggs I think your blind eyes have a patch over them as well as being blind.... Freelander1 and Freelander2 were the geese that laid the golden eggs (and both from the McGovern school of design too) Freelander1 saved Land Rover financially by selling in its millions world wide and brought in a whole new load of customers many of whom went on to buy a Defender or a Discovery as well as creating a whole new niche of safe,family, comfortable (as opposed to Jeep and Suzuki’s rather odd ball products) 4x4’s/ soft roaders/ crossovers. Much in the same way that the original two door Range Rover did for more upmarket 4x4’s where they led the field because there was no other upmarket 4x4 only crude LHD only Broncos and Cherokees in the early 1970’s Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

I agree with MikeJ
Jaguar are more at risk as people / families prefer the practicality of a suv / hatchback over a saloon car. Hence the success of the F Pace. Perhaps Jaguar could concentrate on the F Pace, E Pace and the sports car. I Pace and Evoque are too similar so I Pace could go. I don’t know enough about Jaguars sales figures to determine that was the write call. Let’s not forget that Land Rover stopped producing three door cars as they were not as popular, could we see the 90 go the same way in a few years time......? |

I pace won’t go, it’s been a huge sales success and also gets the corporate CO2 figure down. I had a 3 door Evoque Coupe, it was the car that LR intended the Evoque to be because at launch they predicted that 2/3rds of sales would be the Coupe...... but when the intended market tried to get baby’s into the back they nearly broke their own back trying to get them in and out and sales turned out to be 2/3rds 5 door versions (which were also cheaper!) I doubt the new 90 will be cut too, there is still a big market for short wheel base 4x4’s(“short” being relative in new Defender terms!) I don’t get that excited about factories Eric 😁.
Now an early 4 door RR on carbs would get me excited, as would an original 110 v8, Sienna Miller in Layer Cake, a Lotus Esprit Turbo HC S3 in silver, Prof Suzannah Lipscomb, an Oak Green Mk2 Golf GTi (5 door- I know, weird), a 993 911 C2 in blue, Liz Hurley circa now, and a mk2 Escort RS2000. Individual taste or lack thereof is a mystery, but there’s a lot to be said for knowing what you like 🤷♂️ |

I said it back in the day when JLR cut production of the classic Defender - if JLR was viewed as a single entity then there were Jag lines that should have gone first... Even the F Pace "success" is relative. It's hard to see the I Pace as a success, despite all the awards from the motoring press invited to expensive press junkets - it has not even reached the heady heights of classic Defender sales before the chop. It may have bucked the trend to increase sales YoY in 2020 - only the 2nd JLR product that did so (and the other model Evoque was more of a "dead cat" bounce after a major relaunch); however, that may have been more down to the huge stocks it had and the heavy discounting it had to do to move that stock. I Pace has sold well until Tesla 3 hit the streets - the 3 has a bigger Electric range, even the Performance version is cheaper than the base spec IPace, charging is free and way way faster and you can get one within a week of ordering unlike the 3 months for a new IPace. It helps that the Tesla has only 5 options - version, colour, wheel size, tow bar and do you want full autonomous driving ability - just look at the options list for an IPace it goes on and on and on which creates a long lead in time while they build you personalised car.
Up here where I live there are loads of Tesla3’s despite them having poor reliablity reputation and are as far down the survey list as LR, and here there is only one sales and service outlet for the whole of Scotland. They are proving way more popular now than iPace. There are quite a few IPaces in this rural area, but as as many as there are Telsa 3’s and once the Tesla Y hatchback starts to come on stream you will see even more Tesla’s - they are even rumoured to be testing a $20000 small hatchback now - a city car with 300 miles range! Even though Jaguar makes some quite desirable cars they do have an image problem - Velcro closed shoes and pipes, up market Honda Accord for the 21st Century......... I have a suggestion for JLR - Scrap all the ICE powered Jaguars and turn the brand into your alternative powered vehicle range, even if it means making a BEV “Land Rover”, there simply aren’t enough people out there looking to buy Jaguar products, bit like the old Defender - 19000 cars a year isn’t sustainable/ profitable.
