The dreaded manifold.
Anyone local to Cwmbran that's fancies giving me a hand to get two studs out of my TD5 head?
Everything is off they started moving so went for a lefthanded drill bit.. They decided they didn't want to budge and snapped the bit.

So if anyone has a spare min that would be great. Or even some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kris

Pictures might be worthwhile - can you weld a nut on what remains of the stud? Ed

As you can see they have snapped inside. That's was before I started to drill.

I think that's going to be a bit of a sod to sort out. Particularly with a bit left in it because that should be harder than the steel bolt.

My only thought short of taking the head off and getting it to someone with a machine shop would be can you drill out the centre carefully and then using a sharp punch knock what's left of the thread into the centre.

However my suggestion would be to whip off the head and get it drilled out by someone who knows what they're doing. I've got a mate in Meidrim who could probably sort this out for you if you can get the head off. Ed

you can get a small mag drill in there if you remove some more parts.if you cant find one you can rent them and some good drill bits are needed.

just dont drill to deep

if not head off is the safest easiest way forward...

I always drill hole in broken stud, then wind IN the broken stud, then run a tap down the thread as far as you can. THEN try and wind out the broken stud. Shame I’m so far away or I’d pop over and help. I’ve done a few.

How's that going to help on an aluminium head? Wink Ed

Granted you could make a steel plate to bolt onto the other studs but I don't think that's what you meant Whistle Ed

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wondered that!

Hello

I feel your pain had similar happen to me on my series..... Had to drill it out then use a tap set,

Then I spoke about my issue to the garage who look after my cars and then mentioned the 'bacon saver'?

No idea this type of thing was available. basically you then re thread the hole and fit this sort of spring that when you fit the bolt you can tighten up.

That isn't the correct bolt in mt picture its showing the recoil part

That’s a helicoil. Great things and can save you some times. Timesert is a better, but more costly version. Instead of helcoils on one I did, I just went up a stud size, and increased the hole dia in the manifold to suite

The head will be helicoiled anyway because putting a thread into aluminium is just a no-no because it's so soft. Ed
