I know it’s a risk with anodised parts, but it sounds like you’ve been pretty careful with them. Could it be UV having an effect? 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Yep... UV damage... Will get worse over time... (every anodized unit does)... Cure is to either re-do the anodizing or paint... It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse...

I would paint, this is one of the reasons why I avoid anodising like the plague. However careful you are with it.
Years ago I had a bike that had a red headstock too cap that was red anodised. Looked great at first. Then it went cherry red over time then over to a pinky red then a white very light grey red. All UV damage and wasn’t really exposed much to that even. Heat can cause discolouration too but that wouldn’t be it in this case. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Mine are also similar (from what i remember) And i use Gtechniq religiously due to the other car having the crystal serum ultra... I did have some issues with the optimil door handles a while back incorrect bushings fitted, sent them in to be replaced when i didn't need the car for a few weeks and they actually re coated the handles too due to something with the coating |

Very interested in this, as I also have Optimill hinges.Only recently fitted the, so still looking fresh.
Bear100, how old are your hinges? When did you buy them and when were they fitted? Does the car stand outside (like most Defenders)? The bushings look different to mine. They appear to have an aluminium shrouds (visible on your picture) around them. Mine appear to have simply a nylon bushing. The hinges work extremely well, in comparison to the factory hinges, which were a mixture of partially seized (passenger door) and partially worn to the point of having lots of play (drivers door). Anodic coatings are all susceptible to the effects of ultra violet light and chemicals. Some anodic dye colours are less resistant than others so that is maybe why some forum members have reported little or no discolouration.
For black anodising to discolour so quickly (only after two years) I would be querying the anodising process used by Optimil's suppliers. I would also query the specification given to their anodisers, as has been stated above most Defenders are kept outside and therefore exposed to UV and chemicals are used in the wash process. It would be interesting to check if they are having their components anodised to BS EN ISO 7599:2010. Surprised that nobody offers Xylan or Halar (both fluoropolymers) as a coating option, yes they may only be available in duller or dark colours, but much more resistant to acid and alkalis, hydrophobic and a higher UV resistance. Yes there are some downsides, but in my opinion much better than anodizing. Zaid-M

Installed mine in January 2020. 4 months later it’s turns purple. The door handle and rear door hinges are perfectly fine. According to optimill it’s my fault. Anyone painted their optimill? Any pics?

If after four months they have turned purple then under the sale of goods act they are not fit for purpose. Demand a refund or replacement. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

It seems might be the anodising process might have a problem. But company point of view or support seems defensive and point at customer fault. Like many people here, had spent a good amount of money with the company. If they would have simply admit might be their fault, and willing to help, personally I could have bought more of their products. I was in the mid of upgrading all my interior furniture. But at the end gone to another company instead. So either looking to repaint those hinges or flog it and get another company hinges.
