Penman
Any of you guys run with a penman trailer on the back of their 90. I’m looking for one but as they are all so far away I’d just like to get your thoughts before I travel DON'T PANIC

Excellent trailer, towed them for many miles over all terrain Thumbs Up I’ve only towed with a Wolf so the NATO hutch being higher on the crossmember than a civilian tow bar, must admit I’ve been toying with the idea of one for a while. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Are they the same width as a defender or wider? Can't make it out from the photo.

Yes. The wheel track is the same, too, as like the Sankeys before them they were designed to be towed by Land Rovers. Darren

Tows brilliantly, reversing is a learned art, as robust as a tank Very Happy

110 has standard springs, 7.50 x 16 tyres and hitch directly mounted onto the crossmember (using the usual backing plate now). They seem to tow nose-down on Wolf Defenders too - presumably by design.

^^^ Lovely. Cool 110 too, wish I'd fitted a camel cage to mine instead of a full external.

There are one or two good deals on Penman trailers out there at the moment. I was looking at how they sit behind a Defender and all have a downward slant towards the towing vehicle. The military fit the hook direct to the rear crossmember. For those of you with one do you think my set up would be too low to tow safely?

Your hitch is mounted where most people mount them. It looks to be about 2 inches lower than mine so I don't think it will be much of a problem, particularly if you have some weight in the trailer to compress the suspension somewhat.

You also have the added benefit that you don't need to remove your spare wheel when towing.

Your set up doesn’t look much lower so I can’t see an issue Thumbs Up

I’ll happily be corrected but I’m sure a lot tow with a similar set up. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Careful what you wish for. That design is a major pain in the arse with a Puma, but nice once it's fitted though.

In my picture above that is where I had my hitch setup. Never had a problem towing it like that. Thumbs Up Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

they are designed to tow nose down.

having used mine at speed loaded and empty without issue it doesn't seem to change how it tows if its a tad lower on the back of a 110 as long as the hitch is free to rotate.

I don't think you'll have any problems at all with that configuration, but an alternative you could consider is simply to turn the slider plate the other way up. For a Penman the pintle will be free to rotate anyway, so you wouldn't even need to unbolt it and turn it over, and flipping the slider will raise the pintle by at least 2".

Before you throw your hands in the air and decide that I have gone barmy (after all the slider is clearly marked "top" at the top suggesting that it must be used one particular way up), this suggestion was actually made to me by the boffins a Dixon Bate back in the day when DB not only had boffins but were actually knowledgeable and helpful, ie before the last take-over (after which they have raised unhelpful uselessness to an art form).

I wouldn't want to use the slider upside-down for a heavy trailer or one with an exceptionally high nose-weight, but a Penman or Sankey is a puny trailer by trailer standards and the coupling loadings are not large.
