TD5 Lights not working
Sorry everyone, I know this is a common thread but he goes anyway.

I have a 2004 TD5 with a boomslang loom and TruckLite lights.Generally these work ok however I intermittently have a problem when they dont work. This tends to manifest itself with the pink dim dip relay buzzing for a bit but then they come back on and all is good for ages.

Anyway, I had the dash off to change the lights in the dials to LED from Classic Car LED Ltd classiccarleds.co.uk great service and great pieces of kit at a really good price. LED's work a treat and really pleased. Anyway, I digress. While putting the dash back in I have no lights! I have side lights and full beam with the stalk pulled back to flash but no dipped beam. The dim dipped relay sometimes buzzes but not all the time. When it does, and I push the fog light switch, the dim dip relay stops buzzing! I think I may have an earth issue? Is the big green block behind the dash an earth block. What else could be the problem?

Bypass the pink dim dip relay would be the best option, or at least a test. The relay has two bigger terminals, those are the two that need to be joined. So even just a short length of wire, with two male spade connectors crimped onto the ends will do.

Obviously that is removing the relay, and using wire bypass into the terminal/relay block.

An alternative to bypassing the relay is to reach under the O/S front wing and simply unplug the connector from the dim-dip resistor. (This is the location on a 2.4 TDCi, but I think the TD5 is in the same place).

Yes. Same place on TD5. Sort of below the fm aerial.

Still not sure why the fog light button has anything to do with it though?

Because the operation of the fog light is linked to the headlights being on.

To be honest, I wonder if the buzzing dim/dip relay is a symptom of a failing light switch rather than the cause of the problem? It won't do any harm to disconnect it as described above but this bit from your first post: "I have side lights and full beam with the stalk pulled back to flash but no dipped beam", is classic melted switch contacts. Darren

The switch was replaced when I added the Boomslang loom so wouldn't have thought it was the switch?

Working side and flash but neither constant dip nor main headlights is usually symptomatic of the main light switch having failed, but the odd thing with the OP's problem is that he has LED lights and still has dim dip, since LEDs usually don't work with dim dip.

Personally, the first thing I would do is disable the dim dip, and then - assuming that the fault is still present which is likely - investigate the switches.

The fact that the switch is recent doesn't mean that it isn't faulty, and also there are two switches involved (the side/head on/off switch and the dip/main switch).

The noise from the relay suggests to me that it is getting a significantly reduced voltage which is insufficient to energise it reliably.

Thanks for all the advice.

So, after a lot of methodical checks, which is unusual for me!, I found the problem. Turned out to be the headlight relay next to the fuse box. The yellow one. Not sure if it wasnt seated correctly or corroded. Anyway, took it out and cleaned it up and the problem was solved.
