Removing the crossmember will give you a lot more working room and make the job easier. I've never had a problem removing or replacing gearbox crossmembers, i use a block of wood and a bottle jack between the chassis rails to ease them apart and the crossmember slips in and out easily.

It could have been that it was a brand new Richards chassis and new crossmember - was almost wincing at how much pressure I needed from the hi-lift - but if you’ve had no bother I’m good to go - I reckon!

The original installation for the 300/r380 combination had the gearbox bolted to the crossmember rather than to a separate bracket on the chassis. Thus the gearbox xmember is not in the typical location which may make it easier if you remove it completely.
Vaseline, and LOTS of it, is your friend. I think I used a big jar on each side of the chassis between chassis and xmember when I did mine. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFE...SwdgtdB9OY It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten |

That’s it job done!! Xmember came out and in like a dream - rigged up a little stand for it and it was spot on. Should have seen the state of the clutch, absolutely ballsed. Great opportunity to replace some of the fasteners here and there, exhaust clamps and rubbers, rewired some electrics (also courtesy of me pulling the handbrake lead off), and bled the coolant too. Just need to sort out the wretched vibration from the back end now - going to drop the prop off and take it for a 2wd trip out! Cheers for the advice.

Remember the diff lock if you have a prop off or you will be sat panicking with a box of neutrals thinking what have I done!

Makes it more interesting doesn't it!
Glad the slickshift is treating you well. Personally, I quite like the long throw, reminds me of driving a truck.....or a signalbox. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |
