Gear lever movement?

Hi all,

Just had the gear stick out to glue the weights, but there was no rattle at all from them, so I put it back without gluing, after great pain to my hands! Eventually had the matting up to get the gaiter back on ☹️

Anyway, read the post again and I’m now not sure if I should have glued them anyway in case it’s the vibration of the gears that causes it rather than me just shaking to try and hear them. Trouble is I don’t know what I am listening for?

So, question is:

If I can’t hear a rattle from the weights in my hand are they OK, and

Should the gear stick have a bit of up and down movement after replacing, I made sure the clips were clipped in properly.

Any info appreciated

Hi Chris,

I had an intermittent small vibration noise from my gear lever.
I don't remember any weight movement or noise after I removed the lever. I just glued it as described. Gearstick vibration noise was caused by engine vibration. This cured my problem anyway. It was an easy job, just left the stick off overnight for superglue to dry properly.

Not sure if this helps but thought I'd share.

Cheers. Looks like I will have to take it off again and apply some glue

and go through the pain of getting the gaiter back on!

No worries.

As a side note. I didn’t have any problem with the gaiter. Just lifted it up over the top of the stick and when putting back, going underneath from bottom through gaiter. Not sure if that’s what you did. Probably stating the obvious.

It is entirely possible to push the gaiter down below the gear lever attachment, then ease it back up afterwards, which saves disturbing the mats/carpet and freeing it from the transfer lever.

In the course of developing my "heritage knob" I have done this many times of late!

Black wolf, that’s what I tried to do, but either I am useless or my technique was very poor!

Either way the pain was unreal. Hence I resorted to lifting the matting and going up underneath

I will save the job for when I have some patience in the bank!

Part of the problem is I don’t really know what noise I am listening for! I definitely have a rattle from that area or somewhere close, but I just cannot track it.

As I have learned, trial and error works in the end!

I agree with you, that gaiter around ....Is an absolute Ars0le !!!!
placed it in hot water
piece of cake its just seasoned ,needs tweaking

Do you mean movement whilst stationary or on the move?
There is general engine movement at idle in neutral, (vibration mainly,) if it's on the move and you've noticed a recent difference then I'd get your Propshaft UJ's checked as I found that this was when I had a problem with a UJ.
Usually more pronounced at slower speeds.

Another scenario is that the Nylon ball joint is cracked or degraded, I also had this and couldn't see it was broken until removed for greasing.
I now have the Shift-R V2 instead from TMD which do far has been brilliant and nicely greased too.

This is at about 74k miles or so. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Hi, when stationary there is a very slight movement or lift vertically, maybe only a few mm or so.

I think I need to looking the Shift-R! Cheers.
