Transfer Box and Diff Oil
Hi,

I have a 2.2 TDCI Defender, and it's due a service. It'll be the first time that I've replaced the transfer box and diff oil on a Defender, and I have one question that I just can't seem to find a definitive answer to, despite having been reading this forum and others for days!! I've also checked the owner's manual, LR workshop manual and Haynes manual, and they give conflicting advice!......

Can I use EP 80w90 in both the diffs and the transfer box, and if so, should I go for GL4 or GL5? Some places I've read say use EP90 GL4 in both, but some say use 75/80w90 GL4 in the T-box and EP90 GL5 in the diffs. Others say 80w90 GL4/GL5 in both!

Also, if I can use 80w90 GL4/GL5 in both, is the Extreme Pressure (EP)/Hypoid 80w90 suitable for the transfer box, or is there a non-hypoid/non-EP variety that I should be using in the T-box?

All advice greatly appreciated!

I asked Opie Oils and they recommended a Millers Nanodrive GL4/5 that could be used throughout the whole transmission. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I’ve got Millers CRX 75w90NT+ (GL4 & GL5) in my Gear / Transfer box and Diffs.

No driveline noise at all on the motorway. Very Happy

Engine oil spec for 2.2 w/ DPF: 5w/30 WSS-M2C934-B
Gearbox oil spec: Ford WSD-M2C200-C Bot130 or Bot328 the replacement. Available from LR.
Transfer case oil spec: SAE 75w/90 or sae 80w/90 api GL5
Diff oil spec: EPX 80w/90 or any old cooking oil you have laying around!!!

I use Fuchs Titan GT1 pro c-1 in the engine
LR Bot328 in the trans
Castrol syntrax synth GL5 75w/90 in the T-case
Castrol epx 80w-90 in the diffs

MY advice.

Cheap stuff in diffs. They are very basic units, don’t get exceedingly hot, and are easily changed.

Get the best stuff you can find for your transfer box. It’s doing a lot of work, is very expensive to replace and a PITA to change.

X4SKP - Thanks. Just tried that and looks like I should be ok with most of the oils I've been looking at according to that.

Bluest - Ah right, that's interesting, I'll look into that.

Marks Landy - I'll look into that too. Anything that helps reduce transmission noise is certainly welcome!! Very Happy

So, it's looking like 75/80w90 EP is probably the way to go. Does anybody know for sure if GL5 is definitely ok throughout the transmission (except in the MT82). It's just that I've heard that it can cause increased wear of bronze/brass parts, compared to GL4, and I've heard that there's bronze in the T-box?

Landy Andy - I'll bear that in mind. I'm definitely going to go for a decent synthetic multi grade for the T-box whatever happens.

UtilityTruck - Thanks for the info. I'm thinking now then that I should get fully synthetic 75w90 for the transfer box, and fairly cheap Halfords/etc 80w90 for the diffs.

Hi andy.

Oil specs have got a bit muddled in the mists of time as specs improve but in essence it's the same old clunky units that was being wizzed about in 1950

If you haven't had it done then I would do the gearbox at the same time. it's a small capacity (2.2 ltrs) and no one has changed there's to find it in a nice condition the first time from the factory.

Castrol Syntrans 75-90w multivehicle is a trusted replacement.

For the T-box Then yes whilst it's still a basic unit Good oils will help keep the bearings and gears happy. I used Fuchs Titan Sintopoid 75 - 90 It is a synthetic oil it is a GL5 but reading the blurb it was claiming good things to help,

The axles then yes any 75w - 90 will do but again something good will help keep the gears and bearings happy. I used Motul gear 300 as it's specs are good too.

I have Fuchs Sintopoid 75 - 90w in my Diffs. (GL5.)
The diffs may well be older tech, but for a few pounds I wouldn't run cheap oil in them.
A new diff isn't the cheapest thing either.
Unless of course, your running it into the ground to upgrade to something else. Whistle Laughing ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Devon-Rover - Thanks for all the information. I'm leaning towards a synthetic 75w/90 in diffs and transfer now. And as for the gearbox, looks like I'll be doing that as well in that case!! Luckily it seems to be fairly clear-cut what oil to use in that!

custom90steve - Nope, point taken!! Not planning on selling it any time soon!! I think I'll put something decent in the lot then - probably synthetic 75w/90 as above.

The only question that remains is whether there's any concern over using GL5 any more. I know that everyone here seems to be using it without issue, so it seems that it's not a problem, but I've read a few sites that say avoid it like the plague!!

I did exactly that called Opie... and at the time was recommended (and used)
Motul Gear 300 for the Gearbox, Transfer Box, Front and Rear Differentials

Specification
75W-90 / Racing gearbox and differential lubricant
100% Synthetic – Ester based
STANDARDS API GL4 and GL5 / MIL-L-2105D

Looks like the Gear 300 is a good bet - it says safe for use with yellow metals as well, so I needn't worry about the GL4/5 thing. I may have missed that discount now, but I've found it for £10.99/l here https://raceandrally.com/motul-gear-300-75...il-1-litre which works out a bit cheaper, so I'll probably order that from there.
