FIP shaft and locking plates?
Any advice guys? I'm in the middle of checking the timing of the fuel injection pump on a 300tdi. The locking tool on the fuel pump wasn't going in squarely so I have undone the 3 bolts holding the locking plate on and removed 4 fuel lines from the pump and when I turn the 22mm shaft on the pump there is a lot of resistance and it almost feels 'springy' I have turned it a bit but it sort of then sprung and the nut is hard to turn again. Are they normally like this or have I got something else going on here? Thanks in advance!

Yes, if I remember correctly it is a bit "Spring loaded".

Not sure why you removed the pipes.
Just align everything and tighten the bolts.. I usually use a spanner on the big nut on the pump shaft to turn against the tension, to get the pin to move freely, before tightening the bolts.

what was the running issue or just changing the belt?

it would be unusual for the belt to have stretched to the extend the locking pin (or drill bit end) doesnt lock the FiP sprocket without undoing the 3 bolts. i usually lock that first anyway then see where the crank is.

your talking sprung loaded without the belt on now i take it? Cheers

Thanks for your help guys. No I was just changing the pump timing to 1.54 from 1.4 as I've removed an egr. Ive watched loads of videos on how to do it but none of them mentioned that the pump had a 'springy' feeling to it so when I turned it i was worried incase I had majorly messed something up! All running fine now! I removed the fuel lines as I was using a dti gauge to measure pump lift. 👍🏻
