What type rear diff do I have?
My 2006 defender 90 has slight play in rear diff which makes an unwanted clunk sometimes so looking to rebuild/replace but not sure what type of diff I have? Any help appreciated! Thanks

That will be a “Rover” diff

How much play do you have?

The play can come from diff, shafts, and drive flanges.

Rear end clunk is usually the wheel flanges being worn. The diff does not typically clunk, hums, whines, whirrs not clunk. 90s use Rover diffs unless it been modified.

A-Frame balljoint is also a common candidate for clunking when pulling away/changing gear.

Thanks for the replies. Originally I did think it was the A-frame ball joint and then had a friend think that was the clunk when pulling away/changing gear however I took it to a defender specialist near me and they said the A-frame ball joint was fine and it was the rear diff that had play making the clunking noise? Had new rear half shafts put it by them at the same time as they were fairly worn and flanges were ok so I am ruling that out I think. But not really sure what to think now!

Sorry the shafts were worn but the flanges were ok? both original? never heard it being that way around.

In my experience, i know repeting myself, but diffs dont clonk.

when do you get the noise? pulling away, change direction (fwd to rev) on initial takeup?x coasting, under load? Cheers

Could you get a 'clunk' from the diff end if the splines are worn on the diff end where the shafts sit? 1999 Defender TD5 110

The diff end splines are properly lubricated and don't tend to wear significantly.

Never get it while coasting. Think it's normally if I put my foot down pulling away quickly and its avoidable if I'm being careful. Fairly certain its coming from rear end somewhere, Im thinking it must be the A-frame (even though was told otherwise by a specialist garage) if the diffs definitely don't make a clonk!

If you are looking for play in the driveline, you will find it is probably not play at one point. It will be play in all between all the different parts.
What I would do in your case. Park the car and choke the front wheels. Put the gear box and transfer box in neutral.
Turn the dive shaft to both sides near the diff and see if you have a lot off play. Do the same with the drive shaft to the front axle. If it is about the same it is general wear. If the rear has a lot more play you might have to look at it. Roel
