Re: Conclusion found

So from my research here and looking at all the videos online I have come to the conclusion that diffs, transfer and gearbox oils are all the same. Looking at the handbook also, it is possible to use 1 oil for all 3 and be within the recommended guidelines.

I was planning to use Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90. Which is a GL4 coded Oil. But instead went for the Motul Gear 300 which is a GL4/GL5. GL5 being (from what I have seen from all the research done-but i am no expert Whistle ) is a harder wearing grade.

So, Motul Gear 300 in Gearbox, Transfer box and both Axles it is. Bit more expensive but why eff about.

Hope this helps other and saves them the many house I spent trying to research the best options.

Have not bought the oil yet so if i'm wrong please shout. Thumbs Up

Interesting - good plan to use a top-quality GL4/GL5 oil. I always stayed as close to spec as follows:

75 90 vs 85 90
Interested to hear if a GL5 (Motul 300) Gear Oil which is a 75W90 oil in the diffs will be ok? LR seem to suggest a 85W90.

Any thoughts?

Redline transmission oils.
Evening all, can I ask what the general consensus is between the two types, Mtl v Mt90.

I will be using the oil in the six speed Puma gearbox, online opinion would appear to vary with little difference in applications bar viscosity.

Thanks in advance.

Just ordering oil and bits for my first ever oil change on my 2014 2.2 110 DPF. Found the info from Advanced factors website very helpful and concise as to the volume you put in. Thumbs Up

Engine Oil without DPF 6.9 Litres (LR info above is 7lts, but assuming 0.1l is put in the filter)
Engine Oil with DPF 6.9 Litres
Front Diff Oil 1.7 Litres (LR info above is 1.6l)
Rear Standard Diff Oil 1.7 Litres (90) OR 1.85 Litres (110) (LR info above is 1.6l)
Transfer Box Oil 2.3 Litres (Not mentioned in LR info)
Manual Gearbox Oil 2.2-2.4 Litres (refil and dry)
Power Steering Fluid 1.6 Litres
Coolant 8.2 Litres up to 50% Antifreeze mix (To suit climate)

Going the motul 300 route for gears, transfer and diffs as that way i can't get confused. Rolling with laughter

Renewed my gearbox and transfer box yesterday, straight forward following this thread. Thank you Thumbs Up

I used Motul 300 gear oil for both, the only tricky part was the transfer box fill plug. and don't forget a funnel for the gearbox drain so it doesn't hit the cross support and run everywhere.

Not sure what oil was in the gearbox prior but there is a noticeable improvement with gear changes, its quite expensive oil but worth it i think.

So for the gearbox/transfer case and diffs I can just use this “ Motul Gear 300” in 75W90

Car is a 2010 puma 110. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

So just went into local dealer (needed a sump bolt)

Asked about gearbox and transfer oils whilst I was there

Transfer case 2 liters (less than told here) €78
Gearbox 3 liters (more than told here) €88

Still trying to locate a local autofactors that has the motul 300 stocked in the shelf Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

I wouldn't get too hung up on Motul if it's not easily available. Any decent 75/90 gear oil will be fine. Darren
