Scrap Nissan leaf bits are probably a lot cheaper than Tesla bits, hence this may become a better option for all of us in a few year, and by then some good batteries will be available.

Hydrogen drive is even less useful than a 60 miles on a good warm day ex Nissan Leaf battery drive with only 3-4 hydrogen filling stations (allbehind locked gates too) in the UK to get your hydrogen fill up from! Just reading some figures on the actual costs of the batteries. "Battery prices, which were above $1,100 per kilowatt-hour in 2010, have fallen 87% in real terms to $156/kWh in 2019. By 2023, average prices will be close to $100/kWh." https://thedriven.io/2019/12/06/ev-battery...increases/ |

It's all well and good as long as you want to move any weight. For some reason electric vehicles seems to be really badly affected when you load them up or start towing. This is the abbreviated summary of a series of videos testing a Tesla ModelX with a trailer. Ignore the ridiculous off roading bit at the end.
The Tesla will comfortably do 300 miles unloaded, but struggles to do 100 with a trailer on the back. Why BEVs are affected more that ICE vehicles I don't know, but it is a major issue for the uptake of utility or commercial electric cars. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

I've tagged that to watch later, but I wonder how someone like Amazon has done it's sums and placed an order for 100,000 fully-electric delivery vans, with 10,000 hitting the roads as early as 2022 and a further 90,000 added by 2030. |

Regarding Amazon, they will be for the last few miles type deliveries, low speed urban environment, not heavily loaded and plenty of charging infrastructure. That is really the only market where BEVs are going to be used commercially in the short to medium term in my view.

Didn't Land Rover produce 4 electric Defender units for study that did pretty well?
Maybe someone can acquire one of the units and reverse engineer it to make a kit for the rest of us? |

Current conversions using bits from Nissan's or Tesla's are very inventive but are there really enough if them being written off to make it a viable proposition? When volume brings the prices down, I'm hoping that somebody will engineer proper 'drop in' solutions for vehicles like ours. Darren

It's a waiting game at the moment - I don't feel there's enough in it to be an early adopter, especially when costs of the Tesla conversion appear to be running at £40k to £60k.
I think ideally I'd be wanting a solution with a motor at each wheel for the benefits that would give both on and off road. I did wonder where all these Tesla batteries and motors are coming from - I'm assuming they cannot be bought new? As an afterthought, following on from the doors and bonnet thefts, dpfs being cut off in car parks - when will we be hearing of the first Tesla owner returning to their car to find the battery pack missing? |
