Just reading about another alternative to Provent from a company called Ryco.
https://www.rycofilters.com.au/Crankcase_CatchCan Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Rather interestingly, they infer that Provent catch cans can be improved on by fitting one of their filters: "The high efficiency coalescing media in the genuine Ryco replacement filters exceeded Mann+Hummel (Provent 150 & 200) crankcase filter assemblies and comfortably exceeded offerings from HPD and Process West (Terratuff). The Process West Terratuff filter has especially open filter media appearing to favour gas flow over efficiency. Imported Provent catch cans can be improved when retro fitted with a Ryco replacement filter." Click image to enlarge Not a bad video on the topic also: https://vimeo.com/302198656 |

That is interesting. I really need to fit a catch can soon. WARNING.

These look better than the Provent as the inlet and outlet can be oriented to suit installation, rather than having looping hoses, bends etc
Struggling to find a UK distributor though > 110 XS Double Cab |

Drat. I have been pondering on this... Why does the breather need to feed back to the inlet at all?
Could it just be vented to atmosphere? (hose down to ground) and the inlet feed blocked? Perhaps not the cleanest solution in terms of fumes and occasional drips of oil, but clean in terms of inlet gas! Cheers > 110 XS Double Cab |

I believe you need to maintain a positive crankcase pressure in the TDCI , hence it's not a good idea to vent to atmosphere. I fitted a provent a month ago and although there's not enough oil to drain yet , the filter seems to be doing its job and is wet with oil . It was fairly straght forward to fit , choosing the route and correct pipes was the hardest bit . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Will it be possible to re-cause the collected oil to send it by gravity back to the engine?
For example on the same turbo discharge pipe? Cheers |

I really don't see why you'd want to . In theory the catch-can will only be collecting small quantities of oil over a long period of time. An oil change will come around fast enough for you not to have to be concerned about losing oil.
Any oil passing through PCV would have been combusted anyway (or in reality coating your inlet manifold with crud!) I'm sure someone will be along to explain what would be involved if you were to drain straight to the sump https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

I have no idea! But either way, venting to intake would not provide positive pressure. Venturi effect would likely cause negative pressure? > 110 XS Double Cab |

I'm happy to stand corrected , I have read a couple of posts that don't recommend venting to atmosphere (saving rainforests aside) https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

A few views here... https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic37191-15.html
LR90XS2011: "or just vent the engine to atmosphere (via an oil catcher and filter) and plug the hole in the filter pipe, removes any chance of combustion gases oiling up your intercooler , turbo and egr, just fit the pipe back for the MOT. (all old cars / engines were vented to atmosphere and it is only emission regs that suggest you should do otherwise)" Of course I don't know how reliable a source LR90XS2011 is, but he echo's my thoughts exactly. Unless somebody comes along to convince me otherwise I think I will try it I noticed that my intake is so caked in crap internally, so think it would be beneficial to clean this out, and then keep it clean! > 110 XS Double Cab |

Comment this because on Ebay they offer the Pro-vent 200 with all the necessary connections for its installation, and among all that they offer, there is a non-return valve to discharge the accumulated oil to the engine https://www.ebay.com/itm/Non-Return-Valve-...SwxixaE2vu |

From what I understand, the captured oil will be so dirty and out of specification that you wouldn't want it back lubricating your engine > 110 XS Double Cab

The oil collected has come from the crank case, unless it has been through anything else, it is no dirtier than the oil in the sump! 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread
