go for it D3 is slow diesel hungry loud and does not offer much space for passengers and gear....

Simple answer - yes
I went from a Porsche to a Defender and have never regretted it. Defenders do have their quirks and problems, as do all vehicles, but at least you can work on them yourself if you wish and there is plenty of helpful advice on this forum. The biggest issue for me is/was the dealers attitude to Defenders and their owners. I am lucky that I have now 'trained' mine to some extent but they still **** up. For instance, my DC was in for warranty on the bodywork last week and picked it up Friday and they admitted they still could not locate the problem in the door. On the way home said door started rattling. Saturday I took the door card off and found... door card broken, membrane looks like the aftermath of the Texas chain saw massacre and the lock linkage dangling in the breeze. Put the lock linkage back in and put everything back together. Looked at the new side steps fitted and found bent  bolts.
Needless to say the dealer got a piece of my mind on Monday and now everything is in the hands of the principal. If anything, dealer attitude and their workmanship, or lack of it, is the only downside of Defender ownership for me. Our family is smaller (a 2.5 year old and a 5 month old plus a black lab) but we are finding our 110XS SW SO useful. In fact we use it a lot more than we initially thought we would!
The other car is a 3 series Touring - fast, fun and brilliant for distance driving but the 110 gets the nod for the majority of short range trips partly because it goes ANYWHERE and can fit our entire World into it without even thinking about it. I'd say a big DO IT! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

We actually spend a lot of our time up and down the M6/M5 coming down to cornwall to campsites- The Disco eats the miles but...... I can put up with the longer/noisier journey just to live in a REAL landrover.

Just to throw this in (and i know the D3 is not a range rover) but after a td5, v8 and then the puma defender - whilst they are good - i binned it and went for a range rover...and that is all the defender was/is and more.
Disspationately (if you can be about these things), the defender is a different animal, especially if you have been used to a d3 and are going to use the defender. Dont get me wrong - we did 2k miles in a week a few times a year, fine in the defender, but they are different. Would i go back - not in a heart beat, we may get another defender at somepoint, purely as an off road hack - but... Do it for the experience, but go in eyes wide open Mike |

After todays episode with a D3.......Defender all the way..
Well, it was always Defender all the way before today
I know 2 people who went.. Defender to new D3 and straight to Defender again! |

I think you can enjoy defenders when you have another motor or don't do mega milage. I've had my share of defenders of all shapes and engines. I then had a D3 and it was great. I missed the defender too much but now do lots of mileage and am becoming an unhappy owner. So I've got a 90 200tdi and a order on a evoque to replace my 110 usw. Thing this means I will remain a happy defender owner. I can't bring myself to buy anything other than a Land Rover.
The big things I noticed when I went back to defender from the D3 I could get more stuff in the D3 The brakes are rubbish on the 110 The D3 was much faster I use less fuel in the 110 I miss sitting on tail get of the D3 The defender is a happy place to be and people wave and let you pull out. Getting through less tyres on the 110 You can go anywhere in the 110 from a council estate, a field the Ritz and you don't look out of place. No one things you have too much money. The 110 had to be one of the coolest motors on the road |

You are a lucky man to have a SWMBO who is so pro-Defender  Mine hates it.... only been in it once in eight months....
Capitalise on your good fortune and get yourself the 110 you've got your eye on. Others have said go in with eyes open and I'd echo that thought but take comfort from the fact that if it doesn't turn out quite as you hoped, you'll have no end of people wanting to buy the Defender, so I doubt you'd drop much if any cash 
We have both at the moment and I'd stick by my recent statement on another thread that for what our family needs from a vehicle, a D3 is an allround better choice for us in every way except the most important one.... And you can probably guess what that is
